I'm waiting for a plutonium powered PB.

Or maybe a closing to the 970 will do.

Hehe, i can see it now...

"The new Plutonium powered PowerBook, with lead casing"

    ...unofficially titled the PBPb

Seriously though, as a recent rumor suggested, and many topics on the board have said; i expect the first 970 we see will be in an Xserve as they're too slow and overpriced at present

    • new 15.4" AluBook would be nice, it'll just be the specs/features of the 17" transferred to the 15"
details of the rumoured "anniversary cube"? unlikely.
      faster optical drives
      USB2

    As far as panther's concerned:

    • Safari final
      iChat with vid/voice conferencing (+msn/yim/jabber/icq?)
      more dock functionality
      revamped OpenGL

I wont be happy until Apple makes:

PowerBook Q4 (4th gen quatum cpu)
    - 200PetaQuad High Density SRAM (static RAM)
    - 867 PetaHertz Q4 chip
    - adjustable size holographic screen
    - HD-C3D disk reader/writer drive
    - Dolby Reality Speakers
    - Optional built-in QWERTY keyboard
    - Mac OS 2032
    - Bluetooth Extreme (provides power and 100Pbits/sec high speed connectivity wirelessly.

Or I could just settle with a PowerMac G5. :)

I hoping that they will have an all new Tower design to go with the new PPC 970. Also a matching design for the Cinema Display!

    970/and emacs

Well the fp imacs usualyy go about 6 or so months before an upgrade, and the emac is now its equal, save vidcard and screen, i there by think with the powermacs moving to the 970 that that opens up the 1.25 and faster chips for the imac G4 that is.

On the serious side, this is what we know apple will release at WWDC:

    Mac OS X 10.3
New PowerMacs (they have not be updated for a while)
    New PowerBooks

I think Apple will have problems selling a PowerBook G4 if the PowerMacs have the much faster G5 chips (PPC970). So if Apple do release a PowerMac G5, I fully expect a PowerBook G5 also. There are technical reasons while Apple can not do this, if they can get a G5 PM ready for WWDC then they can do it for the PB as well.

On final note, in the latest UK Macworld Mag, there is an interview with the head of Apple UK talking about poor desktop sales and saying they have a 'major' revision planned to solve this. So it would seem Apple is going to bring something big out at WWDC, but it does not have to have a PPC970 chip in it.

have their been any specs (i.e. operating temp/power consumption) of the PPC970/G5? if they run much hotter than the G4s then surely we're going to see some major revisions to the powerbooks with regards to their internal design and spec to keep the battery life as high as the current ones.

yeah there are specs somewhere. THe 970 uses considerably less power and produces a lot less heat. I looked all over Ars Technica for it but couldn't find it. I got to go to class now , if someone hasn't posted the stats by the time I get home, then I will look some more :).

sounds promising, could be apples answer to the complaints that the TiBooks get too hot. Doubt we'll see it in a laptop until the end of the year - the perfect way to cap off their "year of the laptop" don't you think?

Yes mrjamin, a perfect way to end 2003. Apple can truly end it with a bang! I'm glad to hear that the PPC 970 uses less energy an produces less heat. Beside tha great increase in speed, will have an additonal selling point!

Wishfull thinking aside for a moment:

There will be no release at WWDC.

There will be PREVIEWS (a la the xServe preview) of Panther and a shrouded PPC 970, concealing a new monolithic case in some metallic finnish.

Just after WWDC we'll see Apple release Panther and a new killer App for the internet.;)

We'll see the new towers in another 6-12 weeks.

Expect the new App to blow your mind.

Expect WWDC to make you frustrated and salivating for more.

there are specs running on another post right now. one set say that the G4 7455's (like in the powerbooks) use 15 watts or so at 1 GHz. another source says the "G4+" (whatever the hell that is, probably the 7455 though since the thing said the max clock was 1.25 GHz) uses 21 watts at 1 GHz. the 970, they all agree, uses 19 watts at 1.2 GHz. whatever the case, the simple fact is that the 970s in their current form are NOT good laptop processors a la the Centrinos. they have no powersaving features. hell, the GPUs in our laptops have more powersaving features than the CPUs.

ultimately, before we see these in laptops, apple needs to convince IBM to make a 970 with some centrino-esque powersaving features, like shutting down unused sectors of the processor and so on.

[edit]here is the thread with various 970/G4 7455/7457 stat, many of which are conflicting. [/edit]

Need to say which G4 you are talking about, there are a bunch even the 7455 has 2 major variants. So talk 74xx and the revision.

    G4 7457 Rev 1.1
    1 GHz
    0.13um
    98 mm2
    58 million
    1.1v

    7.5 Watts (Typical)
    2.0 Watts (Sleep)

Compiled from the Errata (decode PN to revision level) and the Part Number Data Sheet for 7457.
