Copy whatever icon or picture you want as the Macintosh HD icon to the clipboard. Then select the HD icon and hit Command-I. In the window that pops up, click on the icon picture - a faint blue outline should appear. Then hit Command-V to paste and you have a brand new icon :)

It's very, very simple – you just need to...

    1. Select the icon you want to change your folder, app or file to.
    2. Choose "Get Info" from the File Menu, or click command-I.
    3. Click the icon in the upper left of the info window.
    4. Choose "Copy" from the Edit menu (or type command-C).
    5. Select your folder, app or file on the desktop and "Get Info" for it.
    6. Click the icon in the upper left of the info window.
    7. Select "Paste" (command-V) from the Edit Menu.

And that should do the trick for you.

I'm not having a go or anything, but a quick search would throw up tons of threads asking the same question, and giving the same answer... ;)

Find the one you want, try the Icon Factory or InterfaceLIFT.

Then ctrl click on your HD icon > Get Info, and click on the icon in that info window. Copy and paste whatever icon you wish.

    Sorted.

    EDIT: Got beaten to it.

And, if you want to make nice, transparent icons from image files try good ol' IcoMaker.

Just mark it (click on it) in the Info window and press backspace (or delete).

Under your Finder Menubar, click on View/Show View Options and click 'Show item info'.

And if you ever want to do back to the original icon - select the icon in the 'Get Info' pane and hit Apple and x (cut).

Iconverter is better. It can convert anything to anything. :)
