Well @*#&, that sounds like a big deal? Is something not well in Appleland?

People come, people go. Sometimes they're replaced by someone better, sometimes not.

Apple has a good chance of existing next year all the same :)

still what's the 'real' story here?

were they ousted? did they leave together? was there a problem with either their view of Apple, or the other way around? did a competing company lure them both away? why the initial denials?

and exactly what were their responsibilities (more than a job title plz)...

could this be steve getting in the way and allocating more resources to the ipod division?

maybe the mac engineering guy said it wouldnt fly with him, so steve told him to go...

That sounds like a pretty good assumption. A pity, too.

It does seem to smack of conflict with the whole music-based priorities. Perhaps the guy wanted the hardware to be an identity in it's own right and not be drawn into the whole Halo thing, such as the iMac now assimilated into the iPod designs.

Mind you, he was only in the role 6 months so perhaps he was just rubbish at it. ;)

I knew people would take a total lack of facts and turn it into yet-another-thread-about-how-music-somehow-harms-the-Mac-platform :p

I'm still curious to know exactly how anyone thinks ANY resources have needed to be removed from the Mac in order to support the iPod and iTunes. The iPod pays for its OWN resources with plenty left over :)

Perhaps we do know the facts and just aren't telling you!;)

I totally agree with you, but it's all part of the fun you have when very senior managers move on. When it happens round where I work, I happily join in the unfounded-doom-rumour-mongering... Childish buffoon that I am:p

I personally believe that the Mac platform is in the best shape it's been in for years, and it's current and future financial health is nothing to worry about.

This will be revealed one day as part of the behind-the-scenes PowerBook G5 Fiasco of 2004! :D

    No surprise that Bucher left.

His own company just released a new product generation and it's receiving a fair amount of attention. The simplest explanation is that he wants to devote more time to it.

Change is inevitable. So I don't think that this will have any real effect on Mac hardware.

Well, the head of hardware just left, so there must be SOME sort of effect. I just hope things stay on a very similar course. Not asking for the exact same thoughts and mindset from the new guy, but I do hope that he doesn't stray too far into left field like that dude from BMW that has completely lost the plot.
