    Hi there,

I finally decided to swich to a Mac but I´m not exactly sure whehter it is a wise choice. All my friend's computers are PC. So there is no way for me to get some free software from them. I am currently in the beginning stages of my PhD programme in molecular biology so another main task is blast-seaching genomic and protein databases which might require more power. After all I am still a student and money is a factor! I would like to get some free version of biology program. Can anyone out there who might help?
    Thanks in advance!

    Paul :)

A biology program. Care to be more specific? I don't think DNAstar is free. We use several programs at work:

    1. VectorNTI - not free, in fact damned expensive, but integrates vector design, BLAST searches, sequence analysis in one program. A purchase for the department, i believe

    2. GeneJockey. Classic only - not sure if free but useful for translating sequeneces, searching for restriction sites, reverse complementing.

    3. EnzymeX - free tool for planning enzyme digests, e.g. compatible sticky ends

    4. 4Peaks - free sequence analysis tool that works with raw (.abi) DNA sequence files.
