    I just bought a sawtooth G4 500 and want to upgrade the cpu. I have narrowed my choices down to 2 upgrades from powerlogix. first is a G4 1.6 with 512k L2 and no L3. the other is a G4 1.4 with 256k L2 and 2MB L3. the 1.6 is 269 and the 1.4 is 259.

is the L3 worth going down 200mhz? this is my main concern.

The processor with the L3 cache (7457) will probably outperform the one without (7447), but not by much. It will also run hotter, if that matters. The 7457 upgrades for the Cube (the only ones with which I am familiar) haven't been very stable but I don't know if this is also the case with PowerMac upgrades.

Congrats on a great system, I have the same one, well mine was a 400 mhz sawtooth.
Anyway I opted for the Powerlogix 1.4 with the L3 cache and it outperforms my Mini by a big margin same goes for my iBook.
All the research I've done and people I talked to pointed to the L3 cache one and that it's worth the 200 mhz hit you are taking.
Also the Powerlogic processor is a 7455 and has never had any issues as far as I know.
You may also add more ram as this system seems to thrive with 1 gig or more.

    Good luck!

you are right about the 1.6 being a 7447 but the 1.4 is actually a 7455. I'm sure heat would not be an issue as there is much more room inside a powermac. worst case scenario is that I add another system fan or use some thermal paste.

thanks for the advice though. I think I will be going with the 1.4. I do a lot of photo editing and the L3 will really help me i'm sure. my intention is to use the tower as a photoshop machine and my mini as my everything else machine. I also have a B&W powermac but it only serves as a BT machine.
