I have a 160 GB LaCie External FW Drive. It suddenly started running while I was sitting typing in Word. I went to verify the disk and I got the error you see in the image attached.
It said it needs repair, but I haven't had to do this ever and I'm curious what the error is all about, do I risk losing my data if I do repair, what does repairing do, and what else do I need to know about it?
The Powerbook I have is about 17 months old and the LaCie is about 1 year old, maybe less.

I would back up your data pronto, just in case. Sometimes you need to run that disk repair thingy a few times in a row until the errors stop.

What exactly is the error? I'm just trying to figure it out. And is this a sign that this LaCie, supposedly being the leader in external drives is failing after light use and less than 1 year of ownership? Guess I'm about to cancel the order for the 2nd one.

Does repair disk erase all data?

All electronics can fail, no matter who made it or how old it is. (BTW, Lacie does not make the drive, just the enclosure.)

I'm not sure what exactly the error is, but typically repairing a drive will not result in data loss. But, like I said earlier, back up your data just in case.

True. I spoke to someone though about it, and they seem to think it's more about something I have on it. Nonetheless, I bought a 400 gb dual format (fw 800/400 usb 1.1/2.0) My Book Western Digital drive for $200 today. It's nice, black and sexy. I'm going to transfer to that and repair my lacie. I don't think it's failing the way I thought it did, but I'm calling Lacie tomorrow as well.
