Reports from the hospital are that both kids will be OK. I wouldn't be surprised if the parents at that school have a few questions for the coaches who were there "supervising".

I'll say he's in shock - how else could you smile with that thing stuck through your shoulder?

My prayers are with both victims and their families. Very happy to hear that they are stable. Sounds like a freak accident.

[It]felt weird and exciting at the same time," said Dodson. Not at all surprised by the comment. Personal experience and other anecdotal experience also confirms this. The body goes into shock mode with adrenalin pumping.

I was pulling darts out of my board once and turned around to see my girlfriend throwing one. It stuck in my shoulder, I pulled it out, drank some more beer, and we carrried on. Hurt a little the next day, but that was about it.

I imagine this hurts a little more than a dart, though.

Between this and Our Lady of the Underpass, it's been quite a day.

Javelin throwing is illegal in North Carolina schools. Incredibly dangerous.

The Javelin is just not being safe. They weren't following the rules and someone paid for it.

The shot put one could have been a simple accident. I have seen enough of the things go wild. I worry about them when I watch my son throw.

Incidents like these are why javelin events are not too big in high school competition, at least in the Cen-Tex area...

this goes to show you that playing football or hockey isn't that dangerous  ;)

So I'm really glad the kid's going to be OK. And, I hope he recovers fine.

But aren't you just a bit curious to see the photo his friend took? Just a little? And by the way, if I was impaled with anything and one of my friends' first reaction was to snap a photo, I don't know if I'd be really ticked off or just outrageously amused...

OK, so I really want to see the photo. :D

I hope you're joking. He's had the avatar for over a year, and it's from a movie.

There was a similar incident with a girl getting impaled in the back with a javlin at a high school in our area. Javlin catching is not for the faint of heart. She recovered and is okay now. They blamed it on the wind but I sez people weren't playing safe. Naughty, naughty...

Yes, I'm joking. I had just finished reading one of his posts when I picked up on this one, so it was fresh in my mind. And appropriate.

Whoops, my bad. Didn't see the link above the quote.

Wow. That's... interesting. He should sell the photo to Ripley's or someone...

I've watched the guys with the discus on the edge of the girls lacrosse field. It just seems too easy for them to lose control and hurt someone.

Hope that they decide on better safety standards.

School athletic events always has accidental moments. I once went golfing, and the golf ball hit a school mate right on the head. When the golf ball hit her head, it made a cracking sound. I didn't know if it was the ball or her skull.

I saw someone back at school get a shotput to the head. That really hurt but I can't imagine how much worse a javelin would be...

Me? I just stick to track events. ;)

Watch out! Band members are injured all the time! OK, maybe not.

But once, at band camp, I twisted my ankle.
