I'm pretty sure that you can find single keys. They are a little expensive though, I'm not sure but I'm thinking like a couple bucks. If you buy it from an apple store, get them to put it in, because if you've ever tried to put a key in a powerbook G4, you'll know how akward it is. It might be easier on a macbook though.

Is it unresponsive only because the plastic key is broken or is the underlying key mechanism is broken? If it's the latter, a keyboard replacement is about the only solution, which will run $150 or so. If it's the former, you may be able to get a simple key replacement for cheap or free from an Apple store...I'm not sure if that's possible on the MacBook, but it is on the PowerBooks and iBooks.

it is unresponsive because part of the key, on the bottom is broken, as well as partof the plastic on the corner of it.

your story is pretty funny cause the EXACT same thing
happened to me. but the solution i took made me pay
    a whopping total of $10.

    here's the story:

i was playing dodgeball with a soft foam ball in my dorm
room. the ball flew, hit a frame on top of my desk, the
frame fell and hit my keyboard, breaking one button and
the bracket under it that holds it in place.

i called apple too like u did, and they told me the exact same
thing. i knew there was a way to replace just ONE key and
bracket without paying $215. so i went to a certified apple
repair store. they fixed it in less than 30 minutes and i payed
    only $10.

so i hope that helps. haha and be more careful around ur
    apples...i know i am now.

Do you have applecare, and if so, why would they not take care of this?

Because it doesn't cover you dropping things on your computer.
