I hope ATV will get 5.1 support at MW in Jan. Besides all the other goodies we all want. Like buying directly at iTunes, I think 5.1 support is a must for ATV. It can already play 720p Anamorphic content. We're just missing DD support from Apple.

Do you think it will just be an update then and not a new system?

I'd like to see rentals, for movies directly from the device.

5.1 would be great, but there might be some kind of fee for DD licensing or something?

But yeah, it should have always had 5.1.

If DVD players costing less than £30 can output Dolby & DTS 5.1, the licence fee (if any), can't be that much.

If I Handbrake at 6 channel

Yes have done that. Question. If I Handbrake my movies at 6 channels, which Handbrake allows as an option, will it play in ATV? I know ATV currently does DPLII, but can it receive that file and play it in DPLII?

I'm just trying to encode my stuff now in 6 channel, just incase ATV supports DD in the future.
