In OS 9, we were able to record brief sound bits using Sound Control Panel. In OS X, as far as I know, there is no built in function to record any sound (if I am wrong, please do inform me on how).

Because of this, I think it would be really cool if next iTunes came with some kind of simple recording tool so that we can record voices, sounds, and etc. I miss how I was able to change alert sounds with my funky creations in OS 9.

    What do you guys think?

reminds me...what ever happened to that rumor of itracks? that would be better...but yes for your average user a very simple recording program would be nice that apple would implement right into the os.

I think that simple recording programs are kind of a joke and apple realizes for the most part they are nvoely based only. I think they leave recording to the pro software simply because then it becomes less than a novelty. And since apple includes no games in its OS then we must assume they are more for producitvity than novetly. Also ntoice how you don't have the option to add a dancing figure in itunes becuase....thats not just dumb, its a novelty.

I disagree. Apple does emphasize productivity, but at different levels. They have professional level of products and consumer level products (PowerBooks vs iBooks for example). They have professional level of softwares versus consumer level of products (Final Cut Pro vs iMovie for example). iApps are capable softwares that can perform variety of tasks. But compared to professional softwares, they are novelty items. Simple recording function is a novelty, but there is a large market for novelties and it can be put to variety of fun uses.

By the way, Mac does come with a chess game. And you speak of dancing figure in iTunes and it is not a bad idea, ability to customize animations that accompany music being played in iTune.

yeah, and i think some simple itracks program would be very useful. i wouldn't because as far as music goes i use the professional end software. but for a consumer that wants to record his voice real quick or something and maybe mix it with something else it could be very fun...who knows what other kind of uses apple could put into it.
