I usually use good ol' VLC but it couldn't play the file that I have. Is it the file, or is there any program I need to use??

A quick Google search of ".mkv" returns this site: Matroska. Looks like VLC and Mplayer should be able to handle it. There are sample files on the site you can download to check your player.

Ah, I googled mtk video apple, though the exact terms are no longer in my browser history. My aim was to find a simple video player. Once I have used the player, I plan to send a donation.

Another for MPlayer here, used VLC for a long time but MPlayer's interface is far tidier, so I've switched.
