Can you name any mayors of major cities in the US who are gay, as is Herr Wowereit?

Isn't the San Francisco mayor gay? Or is he the lone heterosexual ;)

I don't know any Aussie mayors, they don't seem to have the huge profile that the overseas ones do. Probably because there's very little focus on towns and town-based laws, we focus more on state/federal stuff.

I'd be cautious making a statement like that unless you knew every single mayor in the US...

IIRC, the mayor of San Francisco is straight and married. The guy he ran against was gay, I think. But it goes without saying that you couldn't get elected mayor there without being pro-gay rights.

Or how about this. A US election campaign where one of the candidates for the most high profile Christian party uses "every" opportunity she can to kiss other females on stage:

The Norwegian politician in question has been known to be conservative and anti-gay-rights, and these stunts are widely considered to be a way of showing that the party is tolerant and modern.

I'm confused. What does being have to do with being warmly accepting of S&M? I'm gay to the core and that sh*t freaks me out.

Um, no one wants to see anyone's (gay or straight) bedroom fetishes.

    At least not me.

    And I am a pickle-smoking homo.

I used to HATE leather week in DC.

    HATE.

since when did someone become the "Gay mayor" of a place? certainly each identity group doesn't get their own mayor, otherwise, you'd have dozens of mayors.

the Mayor of a City can be gay, but the emphasis on orientation is a bit scary...

that and the way people describe blacks as "african-american"... aren't they just americans whose skin happens to be different from the "majority group"? what the hell were the 60s about again?

    /rant over :p

Why is everyone focusing on the gay part? I think its far more interesting that the mayor openly welcomes S/M into the city!

Nevermind she's just kissing the one on the right, what's she doing to the short one on the left! :D

    Good for the German Mayor.

The mayor where I live in Providence, RI (That's Rhode Island to all you Americans who failed geography ;)) is gay. Not really a "major" city, but fairly good sized.

People down here in the south would flip s*** if that stuff came to our town. Personally I wouldn't care, I'd probably laugh at how hilarious everyone would look.

Because most American's won't admit there are sex positions outside of missionary. Remember, the fundies have always always been taught that sex for pleasure is a sin. (Go ahead, argue) Americans are naturally conservative, relgious, and repressed. No mayor here could afford to take on the fundies and still remain in power.

Hey- speak for yourself! We have the International Mr. Leather contest here in Chicago every year and it's a blast. I personally am not into that kind of thing, but this is America dammit-to each his own.
