Pop CD in, a dialogue box will come up, click on one of the options it asks that you want to do ;)

Windows is barebones as far as i see it, its a horrid OS - I used it for years and my switch to mac has been seamless.

Getting into a war over OS's is not necessary - Mac OS X tiger is FAR FAR FAR better than windows XP, this is not opinion it is fact. if he wants to waste time with that OS, happ days.

OS X is by far more intuitive and faster to operate than windows

Don't try to persuade him. Leave him alone until he gets a very bad virus. Then you should point and laugh.

We really shouldn't be recruiting all of these switchers. The whole iPod Halo Effect is bad enough. All of these PC users must become enlightened on their own in order to worship in the temple of Mac. (Plus all the newbies at the Apple Stores are beginning to annoy me.)

PC User 1: (pointing to the iMac) What's that thing?
PC User 2: Oh. It's a monitor.
PC User 1: Wow. That is one expensive monitor!
PC User 2: Yea. I know, right? Apple is so expensive. C'mon, let's go to Chili's.

just ask him how often he gets a virus, how often his pc crashes, how much time he spends trying to fight off pop-ups, and spyware, how often he needs to run a virus scan, how often he has to reboot, and how often he has to format and re-install. then when he answers, laugh at him :)

Are these really still issues?

Toss up a firewall and don't visit porn sites...No viruses. Use googlebar or firefox...no pop ups. Same for spyware. Rebooting might still be an issue with some I guess. I reboot every other day or so, depending when I want to play around with OS X or Linux. Don't know why he would have to continue to format and re-install. Boredom?

I'm pretty sure anyone who knows how to build their own PC knows how to do all these things. The OP just needs to relax, if we as Mac users want to be taken seriously we're going to have to stop the fight and just get on with business. Answer people's questions when they ask but shut up when they don't.

Time for us to move on from adolescence and into full maturity as a computer platform. We had them all for a while but lost it and got bitter and angry, now we're getting them back and people are spoiling it by going all evangelical.

Still not a fact. What is intuitive for one is not always intuitive for another.

That is 100% opinion.

Unless there is actual scientific research, involving several people who have never heard of a computer before, sitting down on each and trying it out - plus a control group, then no - it's not a fact.

Nero will burn music photo slide show but in WMP format but i already had over a Gig of music from iTunes of Course and my own CDs.. i didn't wanna have to re-rip my music to use it with nero ..
 Nero supports and embraces MPEG-4/AAC just as well as Apple does, the only things you get out of the box with iPhoto/iDVD beyond what Nero provides is easy Ken Burns effect for slideshows and full integration with the iTunes library.

Don't get me wrong, I prefer iLife, but I can use Nero quite effectively too.

your bro seems much more compassionate towards macs than the majority of others....others wouldnt even glance at it, degrading it straight away because of prejudice. thats what grinds my gears.

i would just say, "each to his own"

each OS has it's merits, and many people just refuse to accept the mac because it isnt the dominant OS. i cant convince my PC using friends that OS X is better, im just wasting my time if i do. im sick of the arguments created and thus refuse to talk to any PC user about which OS is better, because at the end of the day, it comes down to what you want, not others.

I think Macs and PCs both can pretty much do the same things. However, macs I think are much better because they have iLife which makes making multimedia projects very easy. PC's are only better for people who want to play a lot of games. Macs are more secure but I think PC's and Macs are both easy to use.

But I like macs because they do everything I need + they look good.

I think misconceptions about macs and there high prices are the only things holding them back from selling a lot more. Seriously, does the average user play video games on there computer?

This idiot at my school said PC's are better. I asked him what he does on his PC. He said internet, word, and games. I said macs can do internet and word, any computer since 1993 can and then asked what games he plays. He said internet games. I was like OMFG, are you stupid?

I used to prosletyze (sp?) Macs much more than I now do

here's one reason to switch to mac - I checked FoxyKaye's spelling of "prosletyze" with a simple command-control-D.

and yeah, the spelling was wrong.

BTW, i consider myself a big-time mac evangelist; so far, i've convinced 4 friends, my brother, and my girlfriend to get macs. and they're all DELIGHTED. mac users have the power to spread joy, as long as we're not too annoying about it.

How do I show a PC user that macs are superior?

you shouldn't try to prove superiority by pointing out inferiority. it weakens your own argument and makes people defensive. no one learns that way.
you just enjoy and eventually people will notice and may follow suit. if not, their loss. ;)

this reminds me of a harry potter discussion several months back. i made the observation that many fans were "evangelists", who if i said i didn't like hp, they had to try to convince me to. so i guess i could sort of put myself in your brothers shoes, and it would probably get annoying to keep hearing the same arguments from you about it when i'm perfectly content with my pc...

that said, be sure to get a good laugh whenever he is wasting time cleaning up after all of windows' security loopholes. :p

I didnt say it was a fact that it was more intuitive.

i had this at Uni on thursday - someone came in with a brand new Vaio laptop and said it was so much better than my PBG4 1.25. so i said "can it do ths?" and fired up motion, doing a quick 30 second clip.

he said "no"

so i then said "can it do this?" while loading a composition i was working on in Shake...

you can guess the answer.

he liked the look of motion/shake/fcp etc that he took the vaio back to the shop and has ordered a MBP!

brilliant.

although, as mentioned previously, stay away from these types of arguments, because it ends up just pissing me off.

Overall, I think this is very true.

Since I use Macs and Winders (Mostly XP, but 2K and 98SE) everyday, I have come up with this comparison for those who wonder why I use a Mac as my personal computer.

I tell them that with a Winders PC, I spend more time and energy figuring out how to do something.

With the Mac, I spend more time and energy on my concept and what I am trying to create.

To me my time is better spent using a Mac.

That usually gets them to thinking about things and then they start asking questions.

Except for running something like Expose, Spotlight, Dashboard widgets, ease of .Mac bookmark/iCal/addressbook/mail syncing, etc...that is until M$ "steals" the ideas and gets them into Windows. OH yeah, Mac's don't (usually) have the delays on their operatiing system releases so I guess Mac's can't "do" everything a PC can- thank goodness :D

I have a NT 4.0 workstation at work, it runs Dual Pentium III 650mhz Processors and has 1.5gb SD133 Ram.

The uptime is currently about 6 months (around).

Thing is, Windows has been designed to work with a huuuuuuggggeeee variety of hardware configurations so how on earth can they have something that is as integrated as OSX out of the box??? They can't!

Now if you are reasonable on a computer you can pretty much get windows running in a state that OSX can with minimal money and effort.

I still find sometimes I need to use my dad's XP 2400+ system to burn dvd's / copy dvd's because my Powerbook and/or Powermac G5 either a) doesn't have the software or b) can't do it.

I think its a matter of taste and as previously stated, it's no ones job to convince someone to dump their investments, provide the facts and let people decide. Mac's are not for everyone, Solaris boxes are not for everyone and PC's are not for everyone....

A geographical oddity
I've come to the realization that pushing people or trying to convince them is a bad idea. I think of my wife, who I have been pushing - it doesn't work. She will get one eventually, but not until she feels like she got her money's worth out of it.

I should have thought of myself...my first modern experience with a mac was one roommate trying to convince another to get a PB, over my suggestion to get a PC. Well, we butted heads and I was not into the idea. But, watching him work (while I struggled with Me - I tried 2k, but the machine was not happy) convinced me. I waited until I was ready to buy and bought my machine 11 days before updated machines were released. And I am happy with my choice.

As a lifetime mac basher, but recent complete convert (no windows for me at all now), I can say what made me switch.
  1. OSX combined the flexibility and power of unix with a commerically supported interface that is extremely simple to use. If you don't care about unix, then this doesn't matter.
  2. I enjoy the integration of all the applications that come with OS X. Some people (many?) who build their own PC like to save a buck of course and also steal the software they use. If you take a look at the volume of applications that come with OS X and iLife, you would easily have to speed $600-800 dollars in the windows world. The applications that apple makes are all amazingly easy to use and integrated well. On windows my mom still can't figure out how to get picture out of her camera and then resize them correctly to email. With iPhoto, this is all automatic. Of course, if you are a person who either doesn't use software like this or don't mind stealing it, this isn't an advantage to you, however I do believe its unfair to compare the price of an Apple computer with this mountain of software to a frankenstein PC without even the price of the OS figured in.
  3. Application installation/removal/migration. Drag and drop to install, could not be more simple. Windows you have the registry that all kinds of random crap goes into. When I need to backup the configuration/data files from any of my applications, its very simple to do. Windows its pretty much impossible to track down the registry entries, randomly placed files in the windows directory, user directory, etc.
  4. The software and hardware work more often than in the PC world. Since apple maintains control over the hardware and software, they can do more extensive testing and verify that everything works together.
  5. Few people argue that Apple hardware is very sexy stuff. :)
But like others on the thread have said, its a matter of personal choice. I mean obviously if you spend 90% of your time on a computer playing the latest games, Mac is not for you.

I would go with this explination.
