I don't get how some people can have both operating systems set up. I can use classic mode to run apps, but I want to be able to have a full OS 9 desktop and boot up to it and such. Can I do this on my 1ghz eMac? I run OS 10.3.4. If anyone could help that would be awesome. Thanks:)

Under System Preferences, there is Startup Disk. Under that, choose the OS 9 Folder and tell it to reboot to it. Then when you are in 9, choose Startup Disks again from the drop down menu and choose the OS X folder.

Just beware that, while booted in OS 9, you can well and truly screw up OS X if you muck with System and Library files. There's no reason you should muck with them, or would under most circumstances, but you can.

Note also that access privs are gone under OS 9, so you can see into other accounts, and other accounts can see your files.

    Just something to note.

    Good point. Not sure.

I'm fairly certain that G5's cannot boot into OS 9. However, is it true that any G4 can as long as the OS is installed, and therefore we're just trying to determine if it was installed on that eMac?

I never installed OS 9 on my computer, but it came with classic mode. Would I have to get the whole OS 9 system disk thingy and install it?

I thought eMacs could still boot in OS 9 because they were selling them to schools and most schools already owned so much software that apple made this exception...at least longer than the iMacs, ibooks, etc. Don't know the actual rev. they switched over though.

Duff-Man says....if you read this PDF at Apple Support it says that the combo drive 1ghz emac will boot OS 9, the Superdrive version will not....oh yeah!

Just to clarify, the following eMacs can boot into Mac OS 9:

    Original eMac (700/800 MHz)
eMac (ATI Graphics) - CD-ROM (800 MHz) and Combo-drive (1 GHz) models only

The following eMacs cannot boot into Mac OS 9:

eMac (ATI Graphics) - SuperDrive (1 GHz) model only
    eMac (1 GHz G4)
    eMac (USB 2.0) (1.25 GHz)

So, unless you have a combo drive and bought your eMac between May 6th 2003 and October 22nd 2003 (hence an ATI Graphics eMac), you will not be able to boot into Mac OS 9. If you do have that model, do what varmit said in the first reply.
