If you bought or are buying the Macbook Air, did you also get the superdrive?

I have my Desktop PC if I need an optical drive, although I haven't gotten the remote disk working yet. If necessity requires it I would put down the money for it.

It would be interesting to find out what alternative portable drive there are and if they can be used through a USB hub, which apparently the APple one cannot.

    Any ideas?

Apparently an xBox 360 HD DVD Drive works with the MBA.... no idea if it will work with a USB hub though. I would imagine most, if not all, external USB drives will work with the MBA. The ones with power adapters will definitely work with a USB hub also.

I bought it, but it's nice that I can leave it at home when I don't need it.

I bought it to have "just in case". I used it day one to install MS Office, and it worked beautifully. Like the MBA itself, it is small, light and a rather elegant design. I threw it in my brief case and haven't touched it since the first day I had it. I don't remember the last time I used the optical drive on my previous laptop, so I don't know if/when I'll ever use this one...

And nice that when travelling, you can take it along to the hotel for DVDs.

I picked one up for occasional use. Mostly burning CD's for use in the car.

It will probably never leave the house when I travel.

I'm seriously considering getting one. The workarounds are pretty slow.

I would get an Air if I had the money...

It's pretty awesome, I just don't like the black keys, it reminds me of a PC

i don't use cds enough to justify the apple external. i think i'm just going to get some $40/$50 cheapo external for when i really need it.

When I bought my MBA last week I also got the Superdrive; used it for the first time when I was doing a clean install and then for installing iWork. I know I won't be using it frequently but I definitely wanted to have the convenience (rather than fiddling with doing things remotely, although I have that option, too, with my other Macs). It's small enough that I'll probably stash it in the bag when traveling, especially if going somewhere where I'll be with friends and we'll be wanting to share photos and such at the end -- burn a CD or DVD with everybody's files on it and boom, we're done..... Haven't watched a movie on my MBA yet but looking forward to that, too.

still mulling it. generally, i image my install discs just and store the originals in a safe place for a rainy day :) did wish there was another way to bootcamp without the need for an external drive though.

I bought it the day I bought my MacBook Air. I have used it once to watch a DVD. It's not really "necessary", until you come across a time you really need to have a CD/DVD drive. It's more of a peace of mind thing for me, I know if i "need" it, especially when traveling it was worth the $91 I paid. I just wish it worked with other machines besides the MacBook Air. I have a Samsung Q1 UMPC that I plan to sell on ebay, and was going to blow it out, unfortunately the MacBook Air SuperDrive only works with the MacBook Air no other machines, including Macs.

If you really need a CD/DVD drive (mainly to watch DVD's ), it's worth it.

got mine along with MBA order, its cool looking as MBA itself and its covered in aluminum!! Used it to install winXP and other windows programs via parallel, no complain at all. Perfect match for MBA.

If and when I get one, the superdrive, though relatively inexpensive will not be on my list. While it would save some time over using remote disk for installs, I wouldn't use it to rip or burn anything, as the MBA will be a 2nd Mac to my iMac.

I bought it to safe guard one thing...

resale-ability in a years time. Much harder to sell a computer to a third party without the superdrive than with.

The extra €85 will pay off in the resale price I'm sure.

I rarely use the DVD drive in my notebooks but I am a bit of a reload person when my laptops start slowing down. I have already reloaded my Air the minute I got so I kind of needed the Drive. Plus it is nice to have just in case.

I bought one for backing some things up. It is nice to have and I didn't think the price was bad. I hardly used the optical drive on my 12" PB but I like having it for the couple times a year I need it.
