So How many Petals Around the Rose?

http://crux.baker.edu/cdavis09/roses.html

Rules of the game:
1) The Name of the game is Petals Around the Rose
2) The answer is always 0 or even

If you figure it out, and manage to get the answer consitently post here.

It took me over an hour and a half to figure out, and even then I only figured it out because my friend guided me on how to solve it.

DO NOT REVEAL HOW TO GET THE ANSWER.

Got it. Got lucky, I guess, as it only took me a couple of minutes. Stunningly trivial, and, if you think I'm lying, give me five dice values and I'll tell you the answer.

It is trivial. Go read the background on it though

But just because it's trivial doesn't mean it's obvious. I'm sure a lot of people will have problems with it, and I see why the site says that often the most intelligent people take the longest to "get it".

Got it...Surprisingly quickly, too. It took me about 10-15 seconds. I think I got the trick on my second guess.

Not to brag, but I'm just usually slower on the uptake...

I don't get it. What rose? All I see are what look like dice? (or is it die?) What does a rose have to do with this? Or am I missing something?

Well, yes, apparently, as the site says, the smarter ones take a lot longer. I must be somewhat dim because it took me a minute or two, and, well, you must be a real moron.

Yes. And when you get the answer, you'll slap yourself.

Clearly. In my defense, I actually think it was probably more like 30 seconds and I do remember that I had the idea by the second turn, but I had to work out the details and that took my another turn or two. So there! I'm now only somewhat mentally deficient.

It took a few minutes of frustration before I understood what the rose was. Then, it is beautifully simple.

I guess I'm somewhere just north of a moron, looking down at jsw

Just got it - woohoo! It was driving me mental!!

The slight hints on this thread did help me out somewhat, it's annoyingly simple once you've figured it out.

That was pretty easy... took about 3 rolls and checks before I figured out how it works.

I must be really stupid because it look me about 1/2 a second.

Although the answer was 4 when I looked first time, thus making it easier I think.

It took me about 20 minutes, but I eventually caught on. I don't know whether to feel smart or stupid that it took me that long.

Something this reminded me of (not a clue to this puzzle): In my college Psychology class, one of our assignments was to "volunteer" to be a guinea pig for whatever experiments the grad Psych students were doing. I was in a test where light bulbs flashed in sequence and my job was to figure out the pattern. Before each round, I was to bet on my answer, based on how confident I was in my analysis of the pattern rule. At least they didn't give me electric shocks for mistakes or make me run a maze and ring a little bell!

I got it in about 20 minute of off and on looking. I was considering it too deeply.

...he would always explain that the smarter you were, the longer it took to figure it out.

Is that supposed to make me feel better?! I've had a good look at this and I really don't have a clue!

Only a basic understanding of math is required...

Ah, that explains it. I went to art college.

You don't know how bad I am with numbers!

But I've just got it. My faith in myself is fully restored.
