How much of a difference is there between the $1000 imac and the $1200 imac in performance

Enough of a difference to future proof the $1200 for a little longer. What are the differences exactly? And if anything get the $1000 version and spend money on more RAM. There can never be enough RAM.

The $999 17" iMac
512MB RAM
Combo Drive
No Remote
Integrated Graphics

The $1199 17" iMac
1GB RAM
Superdrive
Remote included
Dedicated Video

Yes you can upgrade the RAM to 1GB for $75 and add a remote for $29 to operate Front Row on the 17" base model. But you are really shortchanging yourself on the Superdrive and Dedicated Video. The base model has the same integrated graphics as the Mac Mini and MacBooks.

If you are looking to save money get a refurb Core Duo for $949 with a 1.83 and 512 MB RAM or a refurb of the exact same $1199 model for $1049.

The video card alone is worth it to me. I have a mini with integrated graphics and it's great-- plays HD just fine. But I would like to run some heavy 3D games and can't.

With Macs, it's generally good to spend a little more up front if you can. For the two machines you're looking at, I think there's a lot more going for the more expensive one based on graphics alone.

The day you sell it again, the $1200 model will probably give you more than the $1000 model. Take that into consideration aswell.

Since we're comparing...

Is it worth the upgrade, from 17" 2.0GHz/ATi to 20"? What about the 24"? Is it too much for a Basic Home User, no Editing, Photoshop...
