See attached ad. Amazingly 10000 usd asked. However not sold yet but anyway.

I have exactly the same one and in similar condition (very very nice but used example), everything still there (box, earphones, cd, etc).

I´m wondering if anyone know how many where produced of this special edition. Hendrix is one, miles davis another one...

BTW, im not selling it, it´s a keeper

They are rare, so few survive...I guess the guy is after what he can get....Some collectors will pay crazy money for good examples but they like stuff pristine...If you have the packaging etc. and it's not badly marked, you could be onto something.

Wirelessly posted

No one knows the actual productionfigures? How many of each model?

I had one of these from new. But it's not a "limited edition Jimi Hendrix model", it just had a picture of him on the box that's all - all the iPods of that time had photos of various performers on the packaging. Didn't think it was rare?

Very few.

going off of this data, http://www.forbes.com/2004/10/15/cx_ah_1015tentech.html, 2m iPods in 2 years. Assuming linear sales, that's 1m per year. In reality it's less.

But assuming a million 1st gen iPods were produced, lets assume even HDD size distribution, so 1/3 are 10g, 1/2 of those are special (way over-estimating) gives us ~160,000 units.

In reality, it's probably <1/2 are 10gig, and < 1/10 are Jimi Hendrix models, so we're looking at well under 50,000 units.

EDIT: If drlunanerd is correct (I think he may be, my memory is fuzzy), it's say 1/2 are 10gigs, and 1/2 are Hendrix, giving us < 250,000 units. I think.

They are not limited edition...

As drlunanerd said, these are not limited edition iPods, but they just print the pictures of many artists on it. But there are a few Limited Edition iPods from :apple:, and I have included links to the archive of Apple's website that contains the product/promo page showing the Limited Edition iPods (see for yourself):

- iPod Limited Edition Madonna - Proof: http://web.archive.org/web/20021211070354/http://www.apple.com/promo/ipod/madonna.html
- iPod Limited Edition Tony Hawk - Proof: http://web.archive.org/web/20021211121344/http://www.apple.com/promo/ipod/tonyhawk.html
- iPod Limited Edition No Doubt - Proof: http://web.archive.org/web/20021211201256/http://www.apple.com/promo/ipod/nodoubt.html
- iPod Limited Edition Beck - Proof: http://web.archive.org/web/20021211200053/http://www.apple.com/promo/ipod/beck.html

I hope this clarifies most of the doubts...

EDIT:
These webarchives doesn't have most of the images, so after scouring the web I found these images:

As stated its not a special edition. Its just the sleeve that differ from the various boxes. I have a Alanis Morissette one :D

The really hard ones to find are the ones posted by hatimbt and the "Harry Potter" iPod with the Hogwarts crest on the back!

As for the ebay auction...Its worth what someone is willing to pay :p
I for one wouldn't pay 10k for that iPod even if it had belonged to Hendrix himself

TS you have to understand that the 10K is what the seller thinks he could get and he/she clearly doesn't now the true value of it which is why he/she keeps relisting it.

He is also selling's lots of NIB old iPods and I also think he is overcharging for them... Hell, he is selling a Zune NIB for $449.99! or the NIB 1st gen appleTV for $500... OR the Rio Player for 95K!!!

"Nah honey, our kids don't need college, really wanted 4 early iPods."

Yeah...that one is soooo messed up!! 100k hahaha

But honestly, he has some really nice iPods, some heavily overpriced...

My fear is that some crazy bastard with loads of money and no judgement,
buys the lot and sets a whole new standard to the collecting market :(
"My old banged up, not working, box missing iPod gen 1? Well you could have it for let say 5000 $..."

I'm most surprised that no one has mentioned the black and red U2 iPods.

4th gen - greyscale screen, chrome signature rear.

5th gen - color screen, chrome signature rear. (30/60gb, No Search)

5.5 gen - color screen, black signature rear. (30/80gb, With Search)

I don't want to buy his iPods, but I would like to buy whatever it is he's smoking to think they're worth that!

What about them? This thread covers the others...

During my time at Apple as an intern, I bought my little sister a 30GB iPod 5G laser-engraved with the Aston Martin logo during the summer employee sale. It was probably a leftover from a corporate order... wondering if it has some value ?

There are a couple of these out there! They are worth whatever someones willing to pay. I for one do not collect them ;)
