I just bought a 500gb external HD mainly to use for video files, etc. but I did partition it so that I can use a portion for a bootable OS X backup. How should I go about setting this up? What programs are out there?

You can partition the disk with disk utility and then use Carbon Copy Cloner (which is free) to clone your OS X partition to one of the partitions on the external disk.

I'm doing exactly what you want RIGHT AS WE SPEAK (in fact it's just finished!).

You should download something called SuperDuper! It's ridiculously easy to use, and free! :p
