    Good day,

I might be finally catching up with times and am looking into starting the enormous task of converting our old VHS tapes to DVD. I don't know the first thing as to how I go about doing this so looking here for help, advice to get me started. What hardware besides the DVD burner, VCR do I need? What software (free, non-free) do I need and what you guys who've done this sort of thing before recommend?

I will be buying one of the new iBook 14" with the DVD writers ..... (and possibly sell my current iBook to Dad :D )

    Thanks for any responses,

Have a look at these guys bits and bobs -

Specifically the ADVC series of products, my dad has one, i can't remember the model, but essentially he can connect a device suck as a VCR hit play and have it show up in imovie just like a dv cam

Dad bought his at the last London mac expo, so last november, and at that point the canopus boxes were about the best for the money, and his does indeed work without a hitch :D

And in theory, all you need is the box, and what ever cables to hook it up to your VCR, you can use iMovie to record, and iDvd to burn it to a movie disk :)

I can't help you much more at the mo, as what i posed above is pretty much all i know, and it's time for bed  lol

Ah, I had this very question a while back. I got a Pinnacle DV MovieBox thingiee. clink

It imports right into iMovie, no drivers needed. I got it from apple store for $200.
It does a good (enough) job.
