How to distinguish 3G and 3GS from the outside?

A friend of mine is planning to buy a 16GB 3GS via Craiglist. He wants to make sure he gets a 3GS, not a 3G, but he won't be able to boot it up and look at the system information until he has it activated with his own SIM (read: unlocking). Naturally he wants to be able to know whether or not he got the right model just by looking at the phone from the outside. Is it possible?

    TIA!

The 3GS has all silver (reflective) lettering on the back; the 3G does not.

Yes, the iPhone 3G S letters and apple sign on back is alot more visible and shiny then the 3G model. The 3G model letters on the back are barely visible.

I believe the "iPhone" lettering on the 3GS is more chrome-like, the 3G is more muted.

If it says "32GB" on the back, you know you have a 3GS :p

You're joking, but this is actually how I tell my wife's iPhone apart from my 16 GB 3G!

    Hey, it works.

3GS has reflective silver text which matches the silver Apple logo

    3G has grey text.

    Won't a 3G have A1241 as a model number while a 3GS will have A1303?

    --EDIT--

I stand corrected, back of the iphone it is. Missed it when I glanced it over.

not sure what the A1241 and the A1303 is all about though.

Hmmm... Apple put my model number right near the FCC ID on the back of the phone. Must be a defect.

The model number is shown on the back of the phone.

Uh-oh..... mine is defective too! I guess I'd better make a trip to the Genius Bar to swap it for a new one.
