Same question a year later. Why is this such a big deal to implement in OS X? There are MANY visually impaired people that small font size affects.

Shame.

The Mac has accommodated the visually impaired, the hearing impaired, and the physically impaired for decades. Just because Apple chose a different method than you think you prefer doesn't mean that it does not have accommodations for the impaired. The Universal Access preferences pane is designed specifically for that purpose. The Displays preferences pane can be used for that purpose.
