The Mac would not be able to boot up if it was not able to mount the hard drive with the operating system installed on it. If the issue is as you say and that the Mac can not mount the operating system hard drive then it is most likely a faulty hard drive and would have to be replaced. If the the Mac was able to mount the operating system hard drive and boot up but that hard drive is not appearing on the desktop then that can be changed in Finder Preferences.

    Go to Finder>Preferences>Sidebar

Here you can configure what does and doesn't appear on the sidebar of the Finder Windows.

If you want it on your Desktop, in the same Preferences window, go to General and you can choose what is displayed on your Desktop.

This was done in Lion as a way to clean up the Desktop's appearance as well as keep little nooblets from destroying their file system.

    Finder > Preferences > Sidebar Preferences >

Or to show them on the desktop

    Finder > Preferences > General >

Snow Leopard took the Macintosh HD off the Desktop, and Lion continued it. Lion took it out of the sidebar while SL had left it there.

    I've always reenabled both.
