I can't connect to my friends ftp!

I'm a newbie. Just got my first mac, a G4 1ghz, and i can't connect to my friends ftp. I have tried several ways. From explorer, using the finder, and using Fetch. I know the ftp is up i can still connect on my windows machine. Help please!!

Could you describe further where your friend's ftp server is (is it on a LAN?), is there a firewall between your Mac and the ftp server, is the Mac properly connected to the internet (do websites load etc.), is the Mac ftp client using passive mode?

make sure your friend isnt giving you his lan ip instead of his wan ip, a very common mistake many times. make sure he has port 21 open on his firewall.
