If an imac is what you want, then buy, absolutely. They're not going to be updated any time soon. But if you're interested in a macbook (ibook) or 17" MBP then I'd advise you very strongly to hold off.

I would hold off anyway. It's only one more week and who knows what they are going to announce.

Wait a week then buy. But it looks like no updates until at least June anyways, but no imac updates in any case. But for peace of mind, wait a week!

Wait!! You should never buy before an Apple event unless you absolutely have to.

I pulled the trigger on my 17" for the living room two weeks ago now. Like many others I don't expect the Intel iMac or Mac mini to be updated significantly so soon and thus feel OK about the purchase. Quite happy actually!

    Go for it!

Although I admit there likely won't be any changes made to the 17 and 20" iMac lines we never know what Apple are going to release. Its their 30th anniverary and for their 20th they released something new and crazy, for all we know they might be releasing a 23" iMac, which could be very interesting for the OP if he's currently considering a 20" iMac. Its a long shot I know but this is probably the most unpredictable event in regards to new product releases for the last ten years. Wait, just in case. Its not long now!! :)

OK - I'm about to throw in the towel with this waiting thing. I'm going nuts. No matter what I do or buy, it's going to be old news in a month anyways.
Not that I care. I'm just trying to be a smart shopper.

    Monday- throwing down the cash.
    20" iMac
I need to end this obsession

Wait, you should never buy from apple ever! They might release a new product with in the next 6-12 months. So it's best to always wait, because no matter what it won't be top of the line for every.

So I suggest you sit on your money forever, but always come into MR and say things like "i'm holding out for a g5 powerbook" or "I'm waiting for quad core chips & a 20" display in a laptop"

well i'm extreemly angry with the news of NO SPECIAL EVENT ANY TIME SOON! as my iBook needs replacing - with a MacBook, i can't be lugging a 15' screen around and mainly i cant afford £1429 for a MacBook Pro.

so... Apple usually announce the event a week before - that would have been tuesday - no invites or announcenment = no event, sorry  :(

Refurbs just hit the US store today
    at a $300 discount for the 1.83ghz
model of MBP. Maybe that is more
affordable for you? A 15% price
decrease is pretty good, but if you
are willing to wait till like June,
then you can get the new Macbook
    smaller version.

If it's of any comfort, I'm waiting on my iMac purchase until after April 1 juuuust in case. ;)

So what did Apple do 10 years ago?

Actually, yes. Not because it's the next day, but only because I had some time this Sunday to stop by the local Apple store!

    Happy shopping.

They released the 20th Anniversary Mac, which was a sexy (albeit glorified) 250MHz 603e with a 2GB hard drive and a 12.1" Active Matrix screen (800x600).

It was not particularly advanced, cost $7500, included Italian leather palm rests... and a even a concierge for delivery.

It really epitomized Apple's delusions of grandeur at the time.

The thing is, if you want the current iMac that badly, it shouldn't matter what comes after. Something better is always down the road. If you love the thing that much, I say GET IT, enjoy, and in 2 years or so, get the update. If you wait around too much longer, you'll want to wait until they upgrade to merom chips. Then, no, you want the new chips with instant on/instant off technology (santa rosa is it?)

So get it. Then check their stock to see if it went up, know that part of that, was you.
