i would like to see this forum broken into two separate areas:
    1. Politics and Social Issues
    2. Religion

i'm aware that many issues involving religion also involve politics (e.g. 'War on Christmas' has a new jingle: money), and i'm fine with those threads being discussed in #1.

but threads such as the following:
    1. There is no Christmas without Christ!
    2. The Bible: A Survey

...which as of this posting the two top threads in this forum, i feel really should be in their own area. whereas the political area scares away a number of people, and whereas a number of people contributing to those threads only because they're in the political area, i feel that a slightly more useful discussion could occur in another area. plus, it will keep the political area a little more on target, as it were.

mods: thank you for your consideration.

While the OPs request is a good and valid one, it seems that the three topics are so interrelated that it will be hard to separate, let alone moderate. And I would venture to say, that the moderators have plenty to do as it is.

i linked to two threads which have nothing to do with politics. many or most religious topics will, but for those which don't, i think they deserve their own location. they'll probably attract more posters who do wish to seriously discuss religion.

    You have a point...

but this forum was created as an ad-hoc hotbutton area.

It was more PC to call it "Politics,Religion,Social Issues" than it was to call it "Troll Bait".

When Arn first proposed this new area a few of us raised concerns that if we were to make a designated area we'd be confining all of the most volatile subjects, which would make the area a DMZ of sorts: enter at your own risk.

I argued at the beginning that if we opened the area we'd need a more striated membership scheme so the Trolls could get shot down without regulars geting banned for speaking plainly.

Separating out religion would amplify the existing effect.

    I'd need a bigger Troll Rifle.

    Good point!

Playing the "Devil's Advocate", I wonder how hard it would be to moderate a "Religious" forum because it can so easily turn into a political one?

Not to be rude [as I kind of was earlier] but I don't think it's that big of a deal. Of the majority of people who spend time in the Community Discussion it seems only a small percentage of them are actively browsing this board. And while that is based on 30 seconds of research [yeah, I know] I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't receive enough traffic to be broken up. If it did receive such attention then I would understand.

that's a definite concern, and one that i hope a mod can weigh in on.

Yeah, it would be good to hear what the Mods think.

IMHO, they are a bit busy so anything that has the potential to increase their workload would not be desirable from their perspective.

I personally have no problem with such a split; the increase in workload would be negligible, and it might help to reduce some of the negative posts.

Still, it's not up to me. But I'm sure a decision will be discussed shortly. Right now, the admins have family time and are, for the most part, away. :)

I think that a split would be good because it would possibly reduce the number of trolls on threads about religious things.

    Hi,
In Ireland religion and politics are one. (unfortunately) :( :( :(

As far as this forum is concerned, I too think they should be separate.

I have to say that I suggested this a couple of days ago when I realised kalns was in the process of turning every thread here into a proselytizing mission - here - anyway, yes, this would get my vote.

    Merry Christmas, everyone :D

Now that's just crazy talk! ;) :D

Mmm, I wonder if we just needed to get it out of our system? The amount of religious bickering this holiday season has reached feverish pitches I haven't seen in the three years I've been on MR.

But when MacWorld rolls around, and Steve Jobs announces the immediate availability of the iTV, fast high-def downloads from iTMS, a 3-lb notebook with a Flash hard drive and a 10 hour battery life, and the True iPod Video™, the political forums will probably go back to their old ways. :)
