My son has a Ibook G3, and I am aware that there was a logic board recall a year ago which I just found out about. I was just looking for some second opinions before purchasing a new hd and replacing it if this is not the cause.
I have tried rebooting from the osx install cd, diagnosic cd but even with these system cds the machine will not boot up past the apple screen which just keeps on spinning and spinning. I tried connecting with firewire to my powerbook as an external drive, but it then tells me that the drive is not an osx format. With disk utility it allows me to start to reformat, but then the partioning bar just runs indefinitely.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

the first step would definetely be to check the recall information for model numbers, etc. many, many g3's have had recalls.. apple should fix it right up for you if you fall within the models.

I'm not saying its not the logic board, I would definitely check the serial numbers, but from what I remember the logic board issue had more to do with your video issues than boot problems. I had mine replaced in my iBook G3 700 mhz under that recall.
