....but now I've left my job, and I'm back. I lurked the forums the whole time I was gone, but I'm terribly happy to be able to post again. I doubt many (any) of you remember me, but hello again. I'd be happy to field any questions about the wonderful world of Apple retail.

Welcome back Kingsnapped! I'm sure a lot of folks here have questions regarding Apple retail.

Question #1/2 - What did you do there and why did you leave?

1) What was the pay like?

2) Did you get to steal any cool things?

3) Did you sex it up with any hot-but-dumb Geniuses?

4) How many times a day did you lie to members of the public to try and make a sale?

5) What are you doing now?

Welcome back Kingsnapped! I'm sure a lot of folks here have questions regarding Apple retail.

Question #1/2 - What did you do there and why did you leave?

I was a Mac Specalist (regular guy on the floor). Catch was, I was in school too much to go full time. They had me doing a lot of stuff as a Creative, and a lot of Genius stuff, because I was very good at both those positions. Unfortunately, my store did not want to hire a part time Creative, so my title never changed.

I left because of a combination of this, and because my freelance work was starting to overtake the income and hours at Apple.

How was the management? Is it a good company to work for as far as the retail side goes?
The management was awesome, tons and tons better than the restraunts/nightclubs I worked at before. A lot of them came from outside Apple, so they needed some catching up on the technical side of things. Every new manager got up to speed very quickly. From a managerial standpoint, they did an excellent job. My only gripe comes from Apple's constant changes in how they schedule shifts. In the past year, they've changed it more times than I can remember. This caused a lot of headaches, but we got through it.

2) Did you get to steal any cool things?

3) Did you sex it up with any hot-but-dumb Geniuses?

4) How many times a day did you lie to members of the public to try and make a sale?

5) What are you doing now?

1. Pay was above average retail, but nothing wonderful for a lowly part time specialist.

2. A lot of people from Apple read these boards.

3. We just got our first female genius a couple weeks ago, but I did manage to get in a relationship and move in with one of my co-workers.

4. We are not commissioned at all for our sales, so I had no reason to lie to the public. There are times when I'm sure that I was a lot more truthful than Apple would like (don't get an fm transmitter... don't get office "pro"... get your ram somewhere cheaper.... no, you don't need product "x"). Apple's product is good enough that we don't really need to make stuff up.

Did they say "if you speak about anything you saw here we will kill you."

No, but I was told I'd be arrested if I blogged/posted about working for them, as long as I was there. My NDA doesn't end for five years, so I still have to be careful about big stuff.

How much does Apple tell you about what's coming, do you not hear about new products until the night before or are they fairly open.

Steve doesn't email employees to say "hay guys, new iPods coming out in a month... look out!" It would hurt sales, because MS's would be quietly telling their customers to wait for their purchase.

However, we can tell what's going on. We know when something is out of stock and not in transit, sometimes we get new SKU's, with no names (before the 2nd gen nanos and shuffles came out, we had a bunch of new SKUs for $149, $199, and $249. There's also the rare, rare occasion that a window display or a floor plan can give something away.

I can only wonder at the brainwashing you may have gone through, we all know about Corporate America.:D They still own you even in "freedom & liberty loving America"

NDA is short for Nondisclosure Agreement. After a good interview, you have to sign your life away. I can't talk about the inner workings of the store for five years. On my first day, my manager warned me to take down my blogs, and delete my accounts from message boards.... espcially mac boards. He told me horror stories of people being hauled out of the store in handcuffs for giving away info.

Apple is very good at keeping up with employees. I started up a podcast, and noticed hits from corporate within five episodes. Some of you might have caught a short-lived blog at iworkforapple.blogspot.com. The blogger's plan was to anonymously talk about working in Apple Retail. He got shut down (and fired) in two days.

If someone were to break their NDA while employed by posting here, how exactly would Apple find out as long as you didn't put any personally identifiable information about yourself in your profile?

Welcome back Kingsnapped, even though I don't remember you. :)

So you can't have a completely unrelated blog or podcast? And you have to "delete" accounts?

Wow thats so cool! Not to call you a liar, or get you in trouble or anythign, But I've only been here since last April, and I've DEFINITELY seen that avatar before. Are you sure you haven't been posting?

Also, I've been wanting to get a job at my local Apple Store, can you give any tips that could help me out? What they are looking for etc? Anything that could prepare me or give me an edge. :)

I didn't have to, he just recommended it. I just deleted anything that had to do with my application at apple. As for the podcast, I just don't say a word about apple, whatsoever.

I was thinking the same thing, so I checked and his last post (before today) was in 2005. Link
