So some group of *******s decided to break into my house and take everything... in upwards of $150k in total, some irreplaceable jewelry, cash, the safe in my dad's closet which is bolted to the floorboards, video game systems and video games... and MY computer. We have three computers in the house my computer being a mac, and the rest PC's. Needless to say, my computer was the only one taken... just what i need, badguys with taste

    Sorry - that really sucks.

I'd supply the police with your Mac serial number, and also let Apple know it's stolen. Serial numbers should be on documentation you rec'd with the Mac (which hopefully they didn't walk away with).

I hope they catch the bastards.

Sorry, man that really sucks. :(

Do you live in a bad part of the neighborhood? If so, I'd seriously consider installing a security system of some kind. Our family had on when we lived in Georgia, and even though we never had to use it, it did make us feel somewhat safer.

But look at it this way: at least the robbers have good taste if they took a Mac :D ;)

no, i live in a great part of town... some of the neighbors said they had two black guys come up to them asking if they wanted their driveway repaved... oh yea, and they stole my cell phone... (i don't know my girlfriend's phone number... i just always had it stored it in my phone) god boyfriend eh?

But now I'm going to get a 20" G5 imac, and a 12" powerbook from the insurance...

What model computer did you have? I ask in part because I assume you (household) had homeowner's insurance. If so, at least you might be able to get yourself a shiny, new mac to dull the outrage.

Nevertheless, I am sorry to hear of the situation. Good Luck.

That is absolutely awful, mgargan1. I've been burgled too, but I never lost anything that valuable.

Did you have notes about passwords or financial information on your Mac? They may go looking for personal information about you. If they are clever, they might even try to use your cookies to access web sites you frequent.

yeah, like blackfox said, if you have homeowners insurance, you should be taken care of. its still an incredible hassle to have to go through. did it happen while you guys were out off town, or just gone for the day? if durring the day, check with the locals (especially the postman- i swear, those guys see everything) and see if anyone else had noticed anything/had signs of attempted forced entry.
    good luck.

    What?

Anyway, since they know insurance will kick in and you'll be getting new stuff, robbers will try to rob you again in several months. They'll go through your garbage to see if you have had any interesting boxes opened, just to get an idea of what you're buying. I'm not trying to be an ass and scare you, but I just wanted you to know that this is what happens in reality.....the same robbers will try and rob you again soon.

My aunt got robbed 3 times in one year. She lives alone. Eventually, she had bars put up at the back windows. The front windows are left unbarred as they're clearly visible, but since then, she hasn't been robbed and feels much better.

A dog is more effective than an alarm system. I love my dogs, and I'm sure that they've stopped people from robbing us. I know because neighbours have seen randoms watching our house, and someone walked to the side of our house and was looking around, but a neighbour noticed and ran after him (didn't catch him). The best indication: my dogs have started barking like mad in the middle of the night on numerous occasions, and there aren't very many reasons for my dogs to do that. They also don't normally bark. Then we wake up and find the side gate open.

    not so tasty badguys

Last year some fools broke in to my house. They took my digital camera, a silver ring belonging to my girlfriend, 50 € cash and my little stash of something nice to smoke on cold winter evenings when you come home to find your house robbed

But they left my ibook untouched... which was in fact really annoying, since it wasn't working properly after being dropped on the floor months earlier. I would really have loved a new one from my insurance instead... Those stupid freakin pc-using thieves without taste...

    life is hard sometimes

Oh yeah, I understood that part, but the 2nd part of your post =

Anyway, do thieves know that Macs have higher resale value than PCs? If they did, then no wonder they took the Mac.

How did they carry a heavy safe out of the house? Were you gone for a long time?

I'm sorry to hear about you loss mgargan1. Hopefully they will be able to catch those involved. Did you have any kind of security? Do you plan to add security now? Have there been other break-ins in the area?

My friend had his mac stolen a while ago and when they got a new crt iMac, they ENGRAVED their phone # onto the front! Wouldn't it just be easier to get a newer and faster one with the insurance money if they got robbed again?

i'm sorry to hear about the theft! thieves suck. sometimes i'm almost in agreement with the laws in some countries that punish thieves by cutting off their hands or something... i hope the thieves are found and/or your insurance coverage allows you to fully replace everything that was taken.

That sucks big time. Sorry to hear that. I hope you had all of your important data backed up some place else. Because losing data would be my biggest fear.
This is my biggest fear, losing my notebook AND my external HD. This is why I back up daily all of my stuff besides music, pics and videos to my idisk and once a month to an external HD some place else. So even IF I lose both, the only data I lose is <4 weeks old and solely consists of music, videos and pics.

P.S. This always makes me think I should enable FileVault...

Sometimes, if I know I'm going to school, I logoff my laptop so that even if someone steals my laptop, they won't get into my account and info.

And I don't worry about someone taking my HD out and try to read it. I don't think anyone at my school would bother. I'm not THAT paranoid.

Sorry to hear you got robbed... That really, really sucks.. :(

I can second the idea of a dog (German Shepherds work well!!!)

We had a guy walk into our apartment a fe wmonths ago (we left the door unlocked).. He was trying to walk up the stairs when my Bro saw him.. guy tried to talk his way past my brother until I came to the top of the stairs with a 12" Henkel 5 Star Chef's knife (I was preparing dinner at the time) and Abbey, my German Shepherd..

Needless to say, he left in a hurry :D

it's me... but i had the original 17" powerbook w/ 1GB of ram, I had the applecare, and I had about $1000 of purchased songs... plus songs that were obtained in another manner ;)... but as I'm typing this... I think that I'm going to get the dual 2.0 GHz G5 with the 20" screen. I mean, insurance is going to give me about $3300 for my computer, :) :)... and i was going to get the 20" imac, but then I have always wanted to dual processor machine, and I couldn't see myself not buying a dual machine, or even a G4 laptop knowing that Tiger is going to have a lot of improvements for dual machines, esp. 64bit G5's.

I work at an apple reseller, so I can get a good discount, and then i was thinking about just biting the bullet and getting a 12" powerbook. But I think i'll do that when they release the new ones. But all in all, I don't mind getting a new machine, I just wish that I would have saved all my iphoto pics, and all my music. Luckily they *******s didn't take my ipod, and I can just get the songs off of that! :)

Thanks for all your concern... and I didn't have any credit card info on there, but I did have all my porn, music, and my iphoto pics.

Get the call record from your cell phone!

Sorry to hear about what happened. My wife and I were mugged a few months ago - the guys took her purse with cell phone in it. The fools then used one of her credit cards at 3 gas stations and used her cell phone for 2 local calls and 2 calls to Puerto Rico.

The Chicago police detective on the case subpoenaed the phone records from Cingular, got the video tapes from the gas stations and tracked the guys down by the phone numbers they called and the plate numbers in the videos - needless to say, the guys have been arrested and are awaiting sentencing.

If you haven't done this already - CANCEL YOUR CELL PHONE! Then, have the police subpoena the phone records. My provider, Cingular, told me when the calls were placed but could not release the numbers to me - only to the police.

I hope this helps and I hope that homeowners insurance covers all your losses.
