I'm surprised no one has posted on this topic yet.

I like the fact that IBM is making the 7200 rpm laptop drives...its about time.

    What I'm worried is:
    The noise...faster drives are noisier.
The speed...how much faster will it be?
The cost...the article states that it'll be expensive.

Side note: The IBM Microdrives (compact flash type) will have capicities of up to 6GB next year...up from the 1GB now. Imagine that in a digicam, PDA, etc!

    .:|Noise|:.
Don't know too much about notebook drives, but my 7200rpm IBM isn't much if any louder than my WD 5400rpm

    .:|Speed|:.
Switching from 5400 to 7200 is the single most cost effective speed (among other things) upgrade I could have made.
Now I can record live TV @ 720x480 with no dropped frames, yay!

The one thing you should be worried above all else though, is heat. Not going to be much of an upgrade if it overheats your Tibook after use. I know my IBM can burn you if you don't wait for it to cool down. Yeowch!

The article states that the new drives are up to 4db quieter than their predecessors.

Also, the 80GB model will have an 8MB cache. :D

Doesn't the current IBM Travelstar 40 GNX have a 8MB cache as well?

    great news for audio people.

a tiny 7200 rpm firewire enclosure with one of the new IBM drives, the new entry level iBook and an mBox would be good system, at least twice as fast as my beige G3 with AMIII is right now and It would probably only cost what I spent on my beige G3/17" monitor and 56K modem (I can't go back to non broadband hell but it's still one less thing to budget for)

I wonder if these drives would work in new Powerbooks, if they make lot of heat it will be a problem..
