This is a perfect time for corporations to reduce staffing levels without getting beat up too badly.

Tech companies have to be worried about the next 2 or 3 quarters.

I second this. It's a way of companies letting people go that they've wanted to for some time, but are able to use the economy as the excuse.

When profit is the bottom line, I don't think a company is worried about your feelings being hurt when they let you go.

Yeah, I don't think anybody is using the economy as a convenient way to fire people without looking badly. Even though they beat estimates last quarter or year, perhaps the overall projected outlook does not warrant having so many employees for the upcoming year.

All of you may be right, and I may be wrong, but it's difficult for us to know what they were thinking, and what information they were provided when this decision was made.

No, IBM does this each year.
