I have a friend that is offering to sell me his old ibook computer $500 that he hasn't been using a whole lot. It's in fine condition, and here are the specs:

    1.2 GHZ Processer
    30GB Hard Drive
    512MB Ram
    ATI Radeon 9200
    Installed Airport Extreme Card
    CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo Drive
It also includes Applecare until March 2008

    Currently, I am on a 12" ibook 600mhz/20gb hd/640mb ram/CD

For me, this would be a huge upgrade, but what do you guys think?

$500 is a steal, assuming that everything is in good working order.

I just sold an iBook G3 600 for that price not that long ago!

absolute steal, an iBook with those specks goes for at least $600 especially with AppleCare!

    Go for it!

What about the ram though. Would it be worth it so drop in a 1gb chip? I have seen them shipped as low as 100 bucks through Omni Technologies, or Memory2Go. I have no problems installing it myself, but how much would it affect future resale value? I mean, if i wanted to sell it in another 18months should I go ahead an get them RAM?

    Definitely take it!

    $500 for a 1.2GHz iBook G4- go for it eidrunner247! :)

Go for it, more RAM would be highly recommended. :)

If you don't want it can I buy it?

Seriously, if you don't want it I'll take it for that price IMMEDIATELY!

I'm assuming, of course, there's nothing wrong with the machine.

LOL :D I was waiting to see this type of response- there is no denying it, $500 is a good deal for that iBook G4. :)

$500 is an amazing price. I'd say add alittle more ram in it too. I've been thinking about dropping in a gig of ram in to this machine, but I haven't fully decided on it yet. I'm not sure if it'll boost the resale value a hundred dollars though...

    US Dollars?

Does sounds quite expensive considering you can get a Macbook for what the iBooks were selling for a couple months ago...
  16. macrumors 6502

Yes, US Dollars. The thing is though, once the prices are dropping down around the 500 dollar mark, there doesn't seem to be a great deal of depreciation after that point.

For example, I can ebay a my old 600mhz ibook and part out the Airport card and virtually have a brand new computer (considering what I am upgrading to) with Applecare for around a hundred bucks. So, that's how I am looking at it: is it worth it to drop in $100 for a newer system? Right now, I would say yes.

Sure, it would be great to have a top of the line computer, but for what I do, and my needs, it just isn't necessary at this point in time.

Especially with the ibooks: the models have pretty much stagnated for the past couple years. When I bought my ibook in May 2002, it had a G3 processor at 600mhz, two years later, they were at the 1.2ghz G4 processor (a decent upgrade I would say). But since then, the most they have improved in processing speed is 1.42 Ghz, and that's only on the 14" model and those have been selling up until a few months ago.

Please excuse me if I am over the line, I am a new...
I have a 2 month old 12" ibook that I am looking to sell. Here are the specks:

    1.33GHz PowerPC G4
    512K L2 cache @1.33GHz
    512MB memory (DDR333 SDRAM)
    12.1-inch TFT Display
    1024x768 resolution
    ATI Mobility Radeon 9550
    32MB DDR video memory
    40GB Ultra ATA hard drive
    Combo Drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW)
    Built-in AirPort Extreme
    Built-in Bluetooth 2.0+EDR
    Scrolling Trackpad
    Sudden Motion Sensor

I did upgrade the ram to 1 gig.
I also have a waterford sleeve for it and an apple isight I will through in too. If anyone is interested please email me and I will send pictures. I want to move to a MBP. I am looking to give someone a good deal...
