    I have a 1.42GHz iBook wtih 1GB of RAM (512 built in, 512 removable)

i guess the question i want to ask is, would i see a significant performance increase if i were to max the RAM out at 1.5GB? currently, with word, safari, iChat, and iTunes open, i'm using ~200MB with ~460MB inactive, ~300MB free and ~50MB wired. is this still a good set up or would i see less of mr beachball with the added 512 for performance?

    Thanks!

even with the old processor and the amount of free RAM??
would it be kinda like not having enough free space on the hard drive and cleaning up for performance.
see, i've got to convince my dad that, sure, 200MB free seems like a lot, but 700MB free is definitely worth $80.

it's PC2700... i've heard that something faster like PC3200 works and is better?

When I had my iBook G4 1.42Ghz (same as you) I had 1GB too. I looked at RAM prices and they dropped and I decided, why not go to the 1.5GB?? So I bought it and speed difference is VERY noticable. Everything loads fast, much more multitasking and boots up pretty fast. I highly recommend it for you!

    thanks for the advice!!!!

yeah, i noticed that the only "hang" on boot up is at the grey screen, other than that it boots up over 2x faster than my Dell with 1.25GB RAM

does anyone know about the RAM speeds though??
would i have to get the same PC2700?
