well you can also do your own benching by starting itunes enconding the same cd and timing how long it takes ( if the cd drives are same speed) also the amount of ram alters the perfomace of some applications.

That depends on the amount of memory and what you are running.

If you are not running anything that uses altivec, then the G3 will probably be faster for teh same amount of memory.

I think it depends on what you are doing. For example, my 800 Mhz iBook rips a cd about as fast as my 400 MHz G4, but for general use, the iBook seems faster (though it does have a QE compatible video card.) My iBook still only has 128 RAM in it too, so I would imagine things will get a little faster once I add some more. But that's just my 2 cents -- In this case, I would think the 400 G4 would be a good deal faster for Altivec stuff, but the G3 would be faster for non-Altivec (and snappier in OS 9)

if you are arguing with your wife you will never win. and if you do win you will probably be sleeping on the couch, give up while you still can.

well, I have an opp to buy a 400 mhz powerbook, for $800. It can not burn cd's so I may pass on the offer, just wondering how speed would compare

According to:

http://macspeedzone.com/html/hardware/machine/comparison/all/master_list_9.html

600MHz G3 iBook has slight edge over 400MHz G4 PowerBook when compared with various tests. Score of 8-7-1 for iBook and 7-8-1 for PowerBook.

But as many people mentioned, it really depends on what you do. Even though iBook had better score over all, they were marginal. And in some cases where iBook lost, it lost big. For example Quicktime Encode and Photoshop AltiVec comparison.
