I found something odd that I have not noticed before. If my brother is logged into iChat with his mac.com address and I am logged in with my mac.com address I can see him on my buddy list. However, if I switch my log in to my AIM address I can no longer see him in my buddy list.

Also, if I am logged in under my AIM address my mother in law shows up on my buddy list, but if I'm under my mac.com address she is not (she is using the Mac version of AOL, but an old one still OS 9).

Lastly, most of my friends who are on PCs are on my buddy list no matter if I'm logged in with my AIM or .mac address.

I don't get it. Anything I can do to fix this so that I see everyone not matter how I'm logged on?

    Thanks,

    Re: iChat/AIM/AOL Question

You and your brother have be on AIM 4.5 to see @mac.com buddies.

The OS9 version of AIM did not support @mac.com buddy names. (It may have to do with Apple wanting to push people to go to iChat - only on OSX.) But with the new 4.5 it may be ok. Try to get her on OSX though.

The PC version of AIM was updated to accept @mac.com buddies a while back so your PC buddies are there.

Solutions: Update your AIM, your Bros, and your Moms to 4.5. And you use iChat. Or update your Mom to OSX and everybody in your family use iChat and your PC friends can always use the Windows version of AIM.

    I think that will work.

    Re: Re: iChat/AIM/AOL Question

Here's the deal though, my brother and I only use iChat, not AIM. Sometimes I will log into iChat using my old AIM screen name and that is where I noticed some people don't show up when I'm logged in at my .mac address and some don't when I'm logged into my AIM address (both through iChat).

My mother-in-law is always on OS 9 AOL, but if I switch screen names she disappears even though I'm still using iChat. If I log in using my AIM address I can no longer see my brother. Weird.

    Hope that helps to clarify,

might be a stupid question, but are ALL ur buddies added to both your accounts, AIM and .mac?

You must add your budies to each account. As far as the AOL server knows a totally different person has logged in. So you must add your buddies who are missing to each account and tell them to add you as well.
"YOURNAME@mac.com" is totally different from "YOURAOLNAME".

I thought of that, too. I double checked the other day to make sure my brother's .mac address was listed in the AIM buddy list and he was. Just to be sure, I added a couple of variants to his screen name but nothing seemed to work.

    I don't get it.

your mother in law dows not show up when you are in -mac account, simply because aim for os 9 does not support the -mac accounts in aim, and it has not been updated either since ichat came out.
so simple: if you want to talk to classic users, you have to use an aim account, and with Oscar, not as TOC.

when i needd to talk to people with classic, old gaim etc, i use proteus with my aim account (and be still logged in ichat if i need).

I had a feeling that still being in OS 9 would make a difference for HER to not see ME, but OS 9 not being updated shouldn't matter on my end. After all, I still see her when I'm logged in with my AIM screen name in OS X with iChat.

Still, why wouldn't my brother show up when I'm logged into AIM using iChat AV? We are both running OS X (obviously), iChat AV is the most current version of iChat, and both of us are using it. Why would simply using my AIM screen name drop him from my list?

The stuff between you and your brother I do not know the answer on.

However, for your mother's account, I think you are missing the point. ANY interaction of a .Mac address with your mother's account (inbound or outbound) will not work. Once you switch to using the AOL server (through iChat or otherwise) then the connection can be made to your mother.

**Make sure you guys are using the absolute latest version of AIM.** Otherwise you simply cannot connect. After that, make sure you(and your buddy) have added each other. Remember your AIM and @mac names are totally different accounts and your buddy lists are completely different. And sometimes, becuase you see them, does not mean they'll see you automatically and vise versa.
    So again:
1-Make sure you have the latest version of AIM.
2-Add each buddy thats missing in each account manually.
3-Ask them to add your buddy name manually to each of their accounts when you don't show up.
