iChat supports only iChat and AOL/AIM users. To chat with users of MSN or another network, you should try out Adium, which will do text-only chat for Yahoo, MSN, AOL/.Mac and others...you have to get an account for each of the systems you want to use, but it really is the best chat client for people with friends/family on different services.

ichat also supports google talk via jabber. google has a "how to" guide if you want to set it up.

i use adium everyday for chatting with friends. i think it's the best program out there for chatting. you can be signed onto your AIM, Yahoo, Google, etc. accounts all at once. you can also chat with as many people you want. unfortunately, adium doesn't support webcams. you can use ichat whenever you want to video chat with someone though. that's what i do. you should give it a shot :)

Adium doesn't support video chat yet. If you downloaded MSN Messenger, you don't need to delete it. Adium is most useful if your friends/family are spread out on different services, so you can chat with them all within one application. What I think a lot of people do is set up all their accounts in Adium, so they can see who is online and text chat...then they open up yahoo messenger, MSN, or iChat for video chatting with the people on each of those services.
