Okay, so I was offered a very nice price on a refreshed, demo model of an iMac G5, Rev B. and decided to go for it. I was hesitating slightly because of the issues with heat and fan noise. Now that I've been using it, I'm still on the fence. The fan noise is definately an issue. I seem to have one with a noisy CPU fan. It definately ramps up and down with even slight alterations in temperature. Running nothing but safari and itunes, it's been at 153F -159F (68-69C) and the fan is running at about 3100-3300 rpm. The hard drive seems stable (118F & 2500 rpm). The fan noise is not particularly LOUD but the high pitch and alterations in frequency make it hard to ignore.

    So...two questions:

    1) Have people with this model successfully found ways to reduce the noise from the CPU fan?

    2) Are the new models truly an improvement in this respect? Is anyone, with the new isight model hearing the fans ramp up and down? If this really is improved on the new ones, I may return this one and get the isight model instead.

Thoughts, suggestions, experiences would be appreciated.

69C is definately not normal for just Safari and iTunes. How much RAM have you got and is your processor set to Reduced, Auto or Highest?

Processor is set to automatic. When I set it on highest, the fan noise got worse. I haven't added RAM yet as I'm not sure if I'm keeping the computer or returning it. The temperature seems to fluctuate less than the fan speed -- although even the slightest change in temperature seems to cause very audible changes in the fan noise.
