I usually listen to my iMac through my stereo and I don't intend to change that. But I noticed that on my iMac retina, the internal speakers don't actually work. Yes, the startup chime works, and yes, I can hear the pink noise coming from Audio MIDI setup. But itunes, games, that sort of thing, don't produce sounds except when there's something plugged into the jack.

What's going on?

Screenshots, log files, etc available on request.

Hmm it seems to have resolved itself. nm

Yeah that was the problem-- used to having it auto switch. Sorry.

I had several audio devices-- my apple TV for one, and it might have just cycled to the next available one, which wasn't powered on.
