I picked up a G4 MacMini about a year ago and played around with it, while maintaining a PC as my main computer. I am now ready to switch fulltime to a new Mac with the advent of BootCamp and Parallels to run a few of the PC apps I still need. I already have a notebook for work and the Mini is too under powered for me so it came down to the iMac vs the mac pro.

The new 24" iMacs are mighty tempting. The all in one is both a blessing and a curse. The obvious real estate, lack of cable clutter, and superb screen are tremendously appealing. But the lack of expansion and upgrade path with an all in one is also a detriment.

The Mac Pro has more power, a better video card option, and tons of expansion capability. It also costs more, takes up more space, still has cable clutter, and doesn't replace my 20" LCD, meaning even more cost to get a 24" monitor.

During my research I noticed the discount for the Apple Developers Connection program. Since I work at a software company, it wasn't a big stretch to convince my boss to pay for it, giving me a healthy discount on the new computer. The price break is much bigger for the Mac Pro vs the iMac.

So after lots of agonizing about both choices and nearly purchasing both at one time over the past two weeks, I finally bit the bullet and ordered a Mac Pro last night. It is a lot of money for a computer, but with the ADC discount it was slightly easier to swallow. I ordered the 2.66, 2 gig RAM, 250 gig drive, dual super drives, bluetooth/wireless, x1900xt and with the discount it came to $2630 plus tax. Now the seemingly never ending wait for it to ship!

You will not be disappointed. As for 'clutter', if you stick the Mac Pro out of the way or under the desk then it takes up no more space than an iMac. (that's the way I see it anyway) :)

On the fly disc duplication ftw, and no, there is nothing professional about that. People do it all the time.

Thats a beautiful machine and the ADC account should help you along the way
    with other goodies.

    Congratulations!

Congratulations! I am now typing on my brand-new Mac Pro, which arrived today, having been ordered on September 15th.... It is one fantastic machine! I've got mine at the side of my desk, no biggie, and the APS UPS thingy behind it. Wait until you open the computer -- easy to do -- and ogle that graphics card! It is amazing!

In response to the question about why two superdrives....I was spoiled years ago with having two drives on my old PC, made it much easier to copy CD/DVDs, etc., without a lot of swapping of discs in-and-out. It was a no-brainer to order that on my new Mac Pro and I was tickled that it was available.

Personally I like to have a Superdrive and a fast (52x,16x) combo drive. That way I get faster CD read and burn speeds (great for ripping/copying CD's), and DVD to DVD copying.

But yes, two opticals come in handy more often that one thinks.

I miss that from my MDD G4. I now have my second drive in a FW case.

I've been totally blown away by my Mac Pro, it's by far superior to any other computer I have ever owned, including the Dell Precision 670 I'm typing on right now that cost twice as much.

Cool, quiet, powerful and reliable. It doesn't get better than this.

    Enjoy it.

I ordered mine on Sunday afternoon (2.66, 500GB HD, 2 Gigs of RAM, x1900XT, Wireless and Bluetooth, wireless keyboard & mouse, applecare). I can't wait to get it, today is day 3 and it hasn't shipped yet :(. They said 2 - 4 Buisness Days for Shipping. I'm wondering if I should pay for overnight shipping so maybe I'll get it on Friday??? Tomorrow is day 4, so I'm hoping at worst it will ship by tomorrow, but I'm not sure what is going to happen.

    I really can't wait :).

I also ordered the Dell 2407 which will be added to my already owned Gateway 21inch HD LCD Monitor.

I wouldn't mess with the order. I took standard (free) shipping on mine and total shipping time was 3 days. Perhaps I was just lucky, but the free shipping is pretty darn quick! :D
