I've used Adobe Premiere on a PC, and it was able to output a variety of file types (.wmv, .rm, .mpg, .avi, etc). I assume that iMovie defaults to .mov, but would like some clarification on this, as well as what other output types are available:

    1) for compressed files (sharing on web/e-mailing, etc)

    2) for creating DVDs - I assume it's MPEG 2?

With iMovie2, you could export your movies to .mov, .avi, and .mp4 file types.

I'm not sure what additional formats iMovie3 can do.

iMovie exports any format that Quicktime can handle, as well as the DV stream format, and there are a number of codecs avaliable for each format.

Run a movie in QT, go to the export menu and have a look at the options. You'll need QT pro for all the high end stuff like MPEG2, but the MPEG2 codec doesn't render as well as Cleaner 6. although it is faster.

Actually QuickTime Pro provides the means to edit and save quicktimes, not to playback MPEG-2. To do that you must purchase the MPEG-2 plug-in to use with QuickTime Pro.

As for iMovie, it exports to whatever QuickTime format you want but when you export to iDVD it makes a .MOV that uses the DV material you have captured in your hard drive. When that .MOV file is dragged into iDVD, iDVD converts it into MPEG-2, which is the video your DVD player can read.
