Obviously you're not a golfer.
this is going to sound kind of pathetic, but something i like to do on a business trip to a boring area is catch up on my theatrical movies, which i prefer to go to alone anyway. somewhere is a megaplex theatre to go catch a flick at.

You could check out things in Houston, Clearlake, Kema... Kema has a nice boardwalk.. it's near Clearlake and NASA... But Houston is full of interesting things to do no matter what you are looking for... There is anything from the ballet and opera to the Mucky Duck, Astroworld.. (I now live near lake charles, la so I don't know the specifics of what is there...as things change so much! so often) :p

Oh and you could always come a little farther to Lake Charles.. we have Casino's out the butt... L' Aburge du Lac is nice... :p :D

Do you have full days with nothing to do or are you looking for small blocks of time to fill?

I was just in Texas for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and found the Space Center in Houston fascinating...that's about three hours from you. San Antonio is about two hours away...the Alamo's good for a quick visit. (And don't forget the wax museum and Ripley's. )
