in 10.10.3 I would like to have icon view for one folder and list view for another. But it seems that if I choose icon view for users home folder, then all folders open that way unless I hold option key down, mostly I forget. Can I set that folder to open always in list view, but another always in icon view ?

Sorry to waste others time. I found out by trial and error.
Open a folder...change the view to what you want. Right click on an empty space...show view options..always open in whatever view. Now the folder will always open in that view. But, say, the finder window will open in its view.
