instant messenger customization

I have a somewhat insignificant question. I've been trying to customize the sounds that my AIM makes eg.(signing on as well as recieving and sending messages), but I cant figure out what format they have to be in, in order for them to work. The folder that they are supposed to be in is, users/your name/library/sounds. .wav's don't work. Does anyone know the correct format to make this work?

P.S. No I don't have anything better to do.

ok, not what you asked but i use Fire as my instant messenger covers AOL MSN etc..

plus i have it set up to say who has logged on, so i know who has logged on from the next room.
