Of course, someday there will be an intel powermac.

Since apple wants to get rid of "power", what do you think the intel powermac's name will me.

    My guesses are

    - MacMac (hahha)
    - mac pro
    - ProMac

If they are going to get rid of Power across the line I would think it would go as Mac Pro or Mac___ Pro

People created this theory that apple wants to get rid of Power ... I don't think this is the case at all. Power is probably being phased out.

Powerbook is a very old brand name. There are some out there that probably picture the original powerbook when you use that term.

Look at the marketing and press, tomorrow papers will read "Apple debuts new MacBook Pro" instead of a sub-headline buried in an article about a line refreshed to include Intel chips.

Apple is also building the Mac brand. They didn't call the computer last year the iMini ( or something like that) instead they went with Mac Mini ... this is the trend the increased use of Mac.

So Mac is not a replacement for power ... it might even stay power mac ... I'd change it, they should have changed it when they went to the G5's in my opinion ... new computer new name.

Do I love MacBook Pro ... no, but I think they had to change it.

*they already use Pro with the Pro card ... I don't think it will be a prefix

The MacBook Pro is the "Intel Powerbook"

Most likely, the iBook will become simply the MacBook.

Yeah, here's hoping. It makes sense to me, but I do hope that they have two physically different lines like they do with the PBs and iBooks.

And anyone else think it's weird to have the PPC and Intel 15" laptops at the exact same price?

My guess is they will stay the same until the native x86 pro apps come out.. that way if a pro needs a machine between now and then they have no choice but to pay full price for a G4 because running FCP on Rosetta would have to kill.

I also think it might have something to do with the fact that Apple is no longer going to be releasing PowerPC machines, and wants to make a clear distinction that these are not "Power" machines in any way, that they are Intel machines. Machines with "Power" in their name are PowerPC Macs, machines without "Power" in their name are/will be Intel machines - hence why there was no need to change "iMac" to anything.

How about MacTop (Mac + Desktop)....actually on second thought, that sounds more like the name of a laptop.

I swear it's there this time. Unless this excitement has made me madder than normal... :D

It's just before the MacBook introduction, appropriately. :)

Kay, I'll watch for it - I'm sure you're plenty mad enough already, so I don't see how you could be that mad... ;)

The iMac is still iMac, so iBook will probably stay the same. Who knows, by then they'll come up with something new and cool. Or just call it a Mac. Maybe there will be multiple desktops (though hopefully not as many as say, Dell).

I doubt it - doing something like that just wouldn't be very "Apple" of Apple. ;)

If you listen to Steve yesterday when he did his keynote, he said that he wants all of their machines to have 'Mac' in the names so people hear of the branding and will recognise it. So Mac will be in the name if it changes. I'm guessing that power will go from the PowerMac.

iBook I guess will become Mac Book, but without the Pro like the older Power Book which is now Mac Book Pro.

I'm up for MacMac or MacAMD. :D

The only thing about putting the "Mac" in the first part of the name is that it invites derision. You know how people will put something down by adding a "Mc-" in front of it, drawing a comparison to a certain low-quality fast food restaurant?

If they are indeed merging the laptop lines, I'll be sorry to see the iBook name go. It plays so nicely on the popularity of the iPod. In fact, the whole "i-" thing has immediate identification with people. They know that means Apple. The "book" part, the part that they kept? Not so much.

Are you saying that "Mac" doesnt have a direct relationship with Apple?

Why not just "Macintosh" for the PMs? Clean and neat.

Or maybe we'll see something along the lines of the Xserve: "Macintosh X" or "xMac".

Anyhow, here's hoping there's a Wozniak Edition no matter what the name.
