BitTorrent has announced it is launching a new content distribution app called BitTorrent Now, which lets users stream music and video from a library of independent artists and filmmakers.

The app will soon be available for iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV, and offers a catalogue of free, paid, and ad-supported, on-demand content, including VR content as and when it becomes available.

Use of BitTorrent's Bundle format will allow content creators to require users to register or pay for media distributed through the platform, and give them greater control over how their content is offered, presented, and shared:
This is what happens when artists have agency: our shared culture becomes more diverse, more whole; more sustainable. And that's why we started BitTorrent Bundle: to give artists options. Not rules. The freedom to share your story, no matter what form it takes. The right to know, understand, and reach your audience. The right to choose your business model.
The app's launch can be seen as an attempt by the company to distance itself from the file-sharing protocol of the same name and reframe its brand as a legitimate media service, quite apart from the pirated content often associated with the peer-to-peer network.

The app doesn't currently rely on peer-to-peer technology, although The Verge reports that BitTorrent is working to include support.

BitTorrent Now is "coming soon" to iOS and Apple TV. Those who request an invite to the service will receive updates on its availability.

That is NEVER going to be on any iOS device. Ye good luck with getting that past Apple!

P2P & BitTorrent != Pirating Contents. Don't know why others hate BitTorrent and torrent because of massive use to pirating. Anyway, I don't need streaming but I would like to see how this app works. If I can find good individual artists with good performance, I will more than happy to support them.

Torrents are actually brilliant ways to distribute content. More things than you realize are downloaded from Torrents...it only has the name or rep of piracy, but most online games deliver updates like this. Takes a huge load off of their servers and only affects the end users ever so slightly.

I don't know why anyone would bother with this unless the free movies are worth it...It's a wanna be Netflix with a BitTorrent name while not using the P2P technology to do distribution.

Since it's free it's not costing anyone anything.

Some content is free and some will be paid/freemium etc.

It's amazing that torrent = pirate on the forums. The tech is in fact very good, and piracy is just a small abused area of it. Not to mention that is not what this article is about.

People hate p2p and bittorrent for the same reason people think negative about Mac or anything else. Limited knowledge of the topic.

I hate this article. In order to get BitTorrent NOW on an iPhone you must be invited like Mac rumors says !!! No one is reporting this fact. Everyone is saying it should be out "later today" or "coming soon". Most of other blogs I read are not saying its invite only

This isn't something I would be interested in, just because I love iCloud and I use plex for my other needs. Other than that, I don't need another streaming client. Haha.
