Taiwan-based Largan Technology as well as Japan- and China-based camera lens makers have sent dual-lens camera test samples to Apple for potential inclusion in its next-generation iPhone, according to sources from the upstream supply chain (via DigiTimes).

The same source notes that Largan currently supplies over 60 percent of Apple's smartphone cameras, leading some market analysts to believe Apple is seeking dual-camera products from other makers to lower potential risks.

Taiwan-based website DigiTimes has a mixed track record at reporting on Apple's upcoming product plans, but its sources within the upstream supply chain have proven reliable in the past.

The report also follows predictions by KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo that two 5.5-inch versions of the "iPhone 7 Plus" are in development, one with a single iSight rear-facing camera and another boasting a dual-camera design.

The rumored iPhone 7 Plus model with a dual-lens camera system would take advantage of imaging algorithms that Apple acquired through its purchase of Israeli camera technology company LinX Imaging last year.

I think this is where people are getting confused with the 2 iPhone Plus models, Apple may not have decided which one they want to release in September and are testing the 2 models, so basically we may see a dual camera iPhone Plus or we may not depending on how the testing goes. At least that's what i'm taking from this report.

Yeah I think so too. There will for sure not be 2 iPhone 7 plus released with different cameras. They probably have more than two draft models in the making as well focusing on different features.

However, I do like that they are experimenting with double lens cameras. And the fact that they year after year put effort into improving the camera is the nr 1 reason i switch to new iPhone every year.

Yea, there was a rumour a couple of months back that Apple had 5 different models they were testing, one of those probably had the dual camera feature. This is the reason why i'm not getting my hopes up too much that the 7 will feature the dual camera, Apple may decide to pull it at the last minute for whatever reason. However i do think Apple will add new features to the 7 and 7 Plus to make people upgrade from the 6 and 6S.

Absolutely agree. Apple releasing two different versions of the iPhone 7 Plus, in addition to the 4.7" iPhone 7? Not gonna happen.

Interesting approach - kind of like the multiple array telescopes that use multiple smaller mirrors & sensors, and combine that collective gathering power to overcome the challenges of giant mirror telescopes...

just flush the lens. flush the lens ive.

IMO, not going to happen. Apple is trying to make the iPhone PAPER thin (all I can see is Harry Potter looking at the moving pictures on the paper). With that said, I think we are always going to see the Camera hanging out on the back.

I won't even get my hopes up. Ever since Tim Cook has taken over as CEO, most of the product announcements have been pretty boring. Especially the one in 2011. I understand Steve Jobs was on life support then, but it was a pretty underwhelming event with a small crowd, and also a very disappointing phone announcement.

Tim just doesn't seem excited about the products as much as he should be. I miss that in Steve Jobs. Tim doesn't know anything about technology-- he's just a business man that knows how to handle finances. The head of a company like Apple should be a technology visionary, and an enthusiast.

Get back to the sexy design and a relatively bug free OS with the iPhone 7. Stand out from the other smartphones so people actually have a reason to respect the iPhone again.

2010 announcement was pretty awesome. Steve Jobs looked well enough retina screen and FaceTime were introduced. The iPhone got rave reviews that year.

Nothing confusing (if this report is true) - Apple wants to continue to up sell folks and will probably add this fancy dual camera to the 64gb and 128gb versions - 16gb tough luck.

Beautifully put. The company isn't in financial trouble with him at the helm. But a certain spark seems missing - excitement.

In before someone says, the SMALLER 4.7" iPhone deserves this as well. Yep, tons of space in the inside of the smaller version. /s

Well the one thing that does tie in with the report (if it's true) is that Apple plan to release a 256GB version of the iPhone, with dual camera and Live Photos this does make sense (if true).

A spare just in case one breaks, can’t believe nobody has come up with this before.
Redundancy on a phone is just silly. I wouldn't want to pay more for a phone just because it has a backup lens in case one breaks. I wouldn't mind better image quality with a two lens system, but if I really want to take a quality photo I've got a dSLR for that.

SKUs, SKUs, SKUs....

Really hope the dual camera comes with all iPhone 7's and not just a variant of the 7 with an added price tag.

"Hey is that the iPhone 7?"

"No no no...It's the iPhone 7+ Dual Camera Edition Rose Pink 64gb"

Idiotic publicity strategy of Tim. On the name of rumors and brand name they try to gain hype of the product, reveal Apple's secret (so that competitors can take benefit of it), making an image of regular phone company like every other phone companies who are hungry for attention by own leaked news and most importantly killing the actual thrill and importance of Keynote! Steve was fighting so hard to hide everything till the he himself announce the product. And here is this guy, who dont want to take headache of announcement. "Let users already know everything when I announce the product, so that I dont have to explain much :D".

Sadly It is certainly un-Apple!
