iPhone text messages and favorites list did not transfer

I upgraded from a a 3GS to iPhone 4 today which I picked up from best buy. Best buy authorized it there so I could use the iPhone on my way home. When I got home, I synced with iTunes, however my favorites list and text message history did not transfer. Please help. Thanks.

By favorites list I mean my phone favorites list.

Did you backup your 3GS then choose that backup to update your 4?
