iOS iPhone w/3.0 replaced by iPhone 2/2.2 can I restore from backup w/o installing 3

My iPhone 2G, which had 3.0 b3 on it was broken so I got it replaced today. I don't want to put 3.0 on this phone but I still want to restore some non-synced data that I can only do through restore from backup (e.g. notes, texts, etc.) Can I choose restore from backup even though this phone only has 2.2.1 on it?

to the best of my knowledge, 3.0 backups are incompatible with the 2.x os. If you have a 2.x backup saved on your machine itunes should automatically attempt to transfer that to your device, but i don't believe there is a way to use the 3.0 backup.
