Well, in iPhoto 5, you can export a photo (under the Share menu) and set a specific size in terms of pixels but I'm not sure how to resize them in terms of bytes.

Easy answer.......use GraphicConverter. It comes with your Mac.

Open the file using GraphicConverter, then go to Save As. Name the file anything you want, or don't change the name at all, and press Save. It'll go to the next screen, where it'll give you the option of saving the file at a particular size (eg: 300 kB, for example)

Does it come on consumer Macs too though? I can't find it on my iBook nor my iMac. :(

Do I have to install it from the developer tools or something?

Bundled with the Pro range only I think. iBooks/iMacs get other apps like WorldBook and some lame games.

Or for a small fee EasyCrop is a very good and simple to use tool.

Yeesh. Just use preview. Drag your photo from iPhoto onto the preview icon in your dock. Then export to JPEG. You can specify a target size with "options"

Unfortunately that doesn't work using Preview in Tiger. You can open up the image and save as, choosing quality settings but you'd be better off just exporting from iPhoto. Agreed that we are overcomplicating a simple issue though! :)

Wow, I had no idea that GraphicConverter didn't come with the iBook/iMac/eMac range. Its a great basic image editing tool that does pretty much everything that I want quite easily. :)
