Description:: We have run the iPod Killers for Christmas/Summer series since 2004. In that time we reported on 149 portable players and NOT one iPod killer from the bunch. That said, we may actually have a couple of genuine challengers to Apple.

ppl should stop using the moniker "iPod killer". they should use "iPod sales killer".

an iPod killer imo is a digital music player that works on the mac and becomes more popular than the iPod. therefore "kills" the iPod.

Actually, they shouldnt use either, because most of these devices barely dent iPod sales.

Is it just me or does any product with the "iPod Killer" tagline automatically become a crap selling item

It seems as though you a setting it up for a fall.

So Zune should be an iPod Killer then ;)

Some of the designs are interesting, others are boring and then there are the WTF is that? I appreciate that other manufacturers are trying hard to make a better iPod, but the iPod itself is so nearly perfect that there is little that can be done to improve it other than tweak the specs and make it cheaper (both of which Apple has done recently).

The article also claims that the Sony PSP is an excellent MP3 player. Well... um, er NO. Doubt that. Just because the PSP can play music, I really doubt that PSP owners are using it to do so. Every PSP I've seen in public (not a lot) has been used for games. Unless PSP users are buying white earbuds and keeping their PSPs in their pockets to convince people that they really have an iPod.

/Occam's Razor is very useful when analyzing the likely (or unlikely) success of any so called iPod Killer.

i don't think there's such a thing in existence called an ipod killer. there will be semi cool devices that could be available ie. zune and maybe the zen and longshot coby player... but they just don't have the names and impact of the iPod. none of them are a must have.

i MUST have an ipod. idky, but i need one. sure there are comparable players, but ipod makes me drool. when another player makes my mouth water, i'll retract my statement about about there being no ipod killer.

Good god that kid is scary!

Imagine that instead of holding that record thingy, the kid was holding an axe.. or a knife. or a kaypro 64.
